Seriously does JLR have any brand awareness or market understanding , what is the gap in the market that is being filled by a 130 inch defender with an even more premium price than current models. There is no demand in this sector that is why nobody builds a similar vehicle in the market. To build something like this for USA market will mean you will be up against the might of the North American truck market and the reliability factor that plagues LandRover in north america will mean no large uptake.

I could see the 130 7/8 seater being a good replacement for D5. Hopefully there will be enough seating space for taller kids or adults to make use of the rear set of seats. With the range of options available on Defender, it should be possible to specify a version that matches the trim levels available on D5.

With lockdown, we haven't been able to make many journeys with my parents, but the one thing I do miss after selling the old Defender 110 XS is the 7 seats. It was handy for all six of us to go out together in one vehicle . I know we could squeeze six into a new 110, either with the third front seat option, or the optional third row seating, but both are flawed in my opinion for space and comfort. If JLR have designed the interior well, the 130 should make a great family bus. Especially if they ft it with a two piece drop down/lift up tailgate.

130 with 5/6 seats will be the right form factor to take on the premium pickup trucks (which generally come with canopies)

Coming from this genre, the tub+canopy space was cavernous but not that good with long stuff which had to hang out the back. Folding down row 2 seats in a 130 will be an improvement on that because it will have internal capacity for length too.

And if the 130 comes with a clamshell rather than a rear door then you can still hang stuff out of the back too! Win/win!

Clearly down the track they're not going to get second lives with the unruly members of society in africa/middle-east as gun ships like the Hilux but nevertheless still a capable platform. Steve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)

Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter
I'm not going to spoil this thread with random pictures of sh*t in the back of my pickup truck but all I'll say Derek you're barely trying with that photo, good as it is! Wink

But I will add this one, not my truck or actually even my photo, but do you remember passing this pickup Derek?

Some excerpts:
Quote:
Company executives have now officially confirmed a three-row derivative is in the pipeline and will be on sale within the next 18 months. Known as the Defender 130, the more spacious SUV "will hit a sweet spot in North America, China and also the Middle East, which we're not yet touching," according to Chief Financial Officer Adrian Mardell.

Quote:
Jaguar Land Rover's design boss Gerry McGovern hints there's more to come as the company is "looking at what we can do with that brand because with relatively small investment we can increase its appeal. I'm absolutely convinced Defender will become a power brand in itself."

Quote:
JLR's recently announced "Reimagine" strategy will turn Jaguar into an EV brand from 2025, but there are also plans to electrify Land Rover. No fewer than six purely electric vehicles are planned for the Range Rover, Discovery, and Defender families, with the first zero-emissions model scheduled for 2024. It's unclear when exactly the Defender will lose its combustion engine, but it will happen within the next five years.

Large three-row SUVs are a big deal in the US.

Yep, the Defender 130 is the perfect soccer mom car. It'll sell like hot gluten free brownies. WARNING.

I listened again to the Investor day, and the quote on the time line was not 18 months but "12 to 18 months", so, although late, it may be sooner than later.

I wonder if we will start seeing mules on the road at some point. 12-18months is tricky for me about to order another D5 for September but I could bail on the order and tell them to keep the deposit.

A 130 with tailgate would make up for the monumental cockup that they made with the D5 vs D3/4. If I could get a decent spec HSE 130 for say £75k they would sell at least one in the uk - would be the perfect car for the dogs as per the D3 ours don't fit in a 110 and are a bit snug in the D5. 110 MY23.5 X Dynamic HSE
