Advice needed - failing power steering pump
Hi all,

My power steering pump has started sounding very unhappy when applying lock. I've checked the belt and looks fine. It sounds like the pump itself is failing. I also have Aircon and am a new owner so not got oily with the old girl yet.

Any advice on how to tackle this? How do I get the belt off for example? Do I have to take the Aircon unit out and need a re gas?

Thanks

Belt comes off by releasing tension on tensioner on lhs by using breaker bar on it. You can just take belt off ac, no need to remove it or drain gas from it. Cheers

That pump was replaced with a new OEM one in Nov 2020, due to a leak from the 'O' ring.
It is still under warranty so if it has failed let me know and I will get it replaced.

Removal is easy, you need to use a 15mm spanner or shallow socket on the belt tensioner to slacken the belt and remove it.
You can remove the pump with the viscous fan in place but it will probably rip your hands to shreds! Much easier to remove the fan.
To remove the pump, drain the PS system, removing the jubilee clip from the pipe is easiest.
Remove the inlet and outlet pipes from the pump, unbolt the 5 bolts from the front of the pump (10mm) and retain the bracket. Pull the pump off the keyway.

It is quite an easy job, especially if you remove the fan and you dont need to touch the aircon system.

Thanks 130dreamer.

I may give you a shout if that is ok. It all looks pretty straight forward.

The pump has suddenly started making a groaning noise. It works fine and holding fluid.

By ‘holding fluid’, did you check for drips or puddles beneath the pump, or did you check the level in the reservoir?
They make a terrible sound when the oil level is low and air gets in the system. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

So my steering box has a small leak out of the input (I think). I checked the reservoir above the steering box and that has fluid in it.

I don't think the pump is leaking.

I presumed that if the reservoir has fluid in it then the pump should also be full as it is below that point in the system

I have ordered some fluid and will top it up a bit and see if that helps.

Generally, a few lock to lock turns will bleed it out, although there is a bleed screw on top of the PS box. Unsure how you can get to it on Td5s and later, but is there.
Personally I do not like to turn the steering when vehicle is stationary and on high grip tarmac... but thats just me. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing
