I'd be more concerned about the software engineer who programmed the AWD to go from 2wd to 4wd almost instantaneously and then wrote the logic to enable it to swap between the two states constantly just because he /she could and not having any knowledge of the lack of mechanical sympathy it was showing to the clutch packs.

Another problem that the LR assist engineer noticed yesterday was the engine coolant was nearly empty!

Was that an eyeball check or software code?

It was eyeball check with the LR assist engineer. I told him I noticed the engine cover had a liquid stain on it so he popped the bonnet and had a look, dipped his finger on it to taste it and initially said there was no taste so must be water, about 30 seconds later he said hold on there’s an aftertaste here and then checked the coolant which was at its minimum level which he said should not be like that on a brand new vehicle so he filled it back up and took the car for a test drive to listen for the mechanical noise. He came back and was working on the car for about 30 minutes before he knocked on the door to tell me it’s got to come off the road there is a problem with the differentials and that it was a software problem. He looked concerned to be honest gave me a look as if to say this isn’t good.

I must admit when I saw they changed it from permanent 4x4 to iAWD my thoughts were why are they doing this on a defender that should be 4x4 all the time. They are only make the vehicle more complex and asking for trouble.

Today when I drove the car into service department the receptionist informed me she was not expecting my vehicle in and that the Range Rover I was supposed to get was broken then she phoned someone and they were discussing vehicles they could give me she mentioned many were off the road for faults or recalls. Doesn’t fill you with confidence in the brand does it?!

Hopefully this ridiculous system can be disabled, and the car left in 4wd all the time. I'll live with a percent or two higher fuel usage.

Looks like it could be a configuration error

I would point your dealer to the following document:
SSM75294 - Defender (L663) & Discovery (L462) 21MY - 2 wheel drive only displayed in IPC

Thanks, any documentation on this that you could share would be much appreciated. I’m now worried about the engine coolant tank though.

I’ve asked LR if they can replace the vehicle. Not happy with a brand new vehicle doing this the second day I drove it.

Have the same issue. So at least you are not alone anymore. No mechanical problems or noises though, just a message on the dash. Visiting a dealer today. Keep posting.

Check your engine coolant tank level. Apparently the problem is the differentials but the Land Rover assist engineers diagnostic test showed 4 warning codes. I’m considering instructing a solicitor to deal with this. Will keep you posted.

This is becoming a joke....just had a voice message left on my phone from the dealership to confirm if I will be dropping my vehicle off with the service department for tomorrow morning!...they already have my vehicle! Mad terrible dealership I won’t be using them again.

Laughing It wouldn’t surprise me if there had been a few cars go missing from this dealership.

LR resolution have just been on the phone and I gave them all the details of the problems with my car and how the dealership imo are at fault etc they have tried calling the dealership but couldn’t get through, if they can’t get through by tomorrow lunchtime an email will be sent to the service manger to get in touch ASAP. I’m due a call from LRR sometime tomorrow with an update.

From December 1987 brochure for the then 90/110 models regarding the benefits of permanent 4wd.

I currently drive a Puma which I am happy with. I have nothing against the new model per se but it just is not for me. I feel for anybody who is having problems with a vehicle and from what I have read in this thread everyone seems to be on a learning curve at the expense of the owner. I hope this is sorted soon and you can get back to enjoying your pride and joy. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel
