When I first got my defender a couple of years ago I spent quite a lot of time reading all about the causes of my clunk.

I changed to 1 piece half-shafts which helped a bit, but other than that there just seemed to be little bits of slack here and there but nothing that seemed badly wrong.

Over the last 2 years its got much better, only rarely clunking & I don't think about it much any more.

I think that's just down to my driving style adapting! Smile

Rear damper bushes are worth looking at too, they can do this due to front to rear weight transfer.
The rear uppers when going tend to knock and the rear lowers go on quite low miles.

Guess who has to change these very soon.
Often only on one side it can be worse than the other.
Move the Defender body around and look and listen for it. The fronts Iโ€™ve never had issues with.

Worth checking, itโ€™s not always driveline related. Even the bonnet hinges can make you think itโ€™s something else all together. KEEP CALM AND Drill ON

I chased my tail a bit on this and before almost giving up the final bushes replacement solved it.

Admittedly its all quite cheap to resolve! It all made improvements along the way... they did warn me owning an old car would have its pitfalls at times..
