Strange indicator fault

Hi all, hope you are well. I have a strange and confusing indicator fault on my 1997 300TDI 90 Truck cab and I'm hoping someone might have seen similar.

Basically, my indicators work fine some of the time but then, for no apparent reason, if I indicate left or right they stop working and the fuel and temperature gauges die. My initial thought was that this is simply a fuse blowing as they are all on the same fuse, but fuse is fine. What's more, if I leave it then it will suddenly be ok again.

Happened last night at the start of 10 mile journey - indicators failed and gauges died the first time I used them then 7 miles later gauges came back to life as I'm driving along and then the indicators are working fine again too. Very odd and very frustrating. Hazards work fine even when indicators/gauges are not working.

I've checked the indicator relay and that seems ok. All bulb holders are clean and moisture free and when they work they all work fine. The indicator stalk has a reasonable amount of slack in it, so I wondered if that might be causing a short somewhere, but when the indicators fail no amount of stalk wiggling will bring them back to life, so I suspect that might be ok.

I'd be grateful for any ideas, as I'm at a bit of a loss and it is getting very annoying!

Could also be an earth fault behind the dash somewhere. There's not going to be an easy answer, unfortunately. It'll just be a case of tracing wires and checking connections. Darren

1996 Defender 90 300 Tdi HT Bronze Green

Usually earth problems, or frayed wire which would account for the intermittent connection when the car is moving over bumps etc. but the stalk could be on the way out also. I am on my 3rd stalk after 6 years.. Jeff
