Replace cigarette socket with USB
Had the centre console out to hardwire a dash cam today.

Whilst I was at Halfords getting supplies, I spotted this USB port thing:

https://www.halfords.com/tools/fuses-elect...gJit_D_BwE

The first review was someone with a defender rating it, so I bought one.

I must have spent 30 mins wrestling the cigarette lighter out, for the Halfords one not to fit through the hole Big Cry and the prongs are laid out differently (so would have to replace the plug).

Has anyone used the Blue Sea ports? Do they fit through the hole?

Stu,

I've got the Bluesea one fitted, I recall needing to gently enlarge the hole in the dash with a file when I fitted it Keith

I fitted the bluesea usb, apart from the wrestling to get the cigarette lighter out it was fine, no hassle at all . I just made up a tail to fit the original connector. Thumbs Up

These work well from Ian at IRB developments. USB-A and USB-C sockets

BS for me too but a 12v socket. But a little enlargement if needed as suggested a round file or I used my Dremel with a little sanding drum on it. That’ll do the trick.
If you don’t want to modify the standard socket just add a mini connection loom in.
I think if I recall it’s only 5.3mm standard spade terminals. Just made sure the cable dia is equal to or slightly larger than the standard. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

Cheers for the responses Thumbs Up

That IRB one looks spot on. Hard to find any that have USB-c and charge at 3.6amp. 2011 CSW XS 90

I have had to turn down the blue sea USB sockets on my myford lathe to get them to fit the three Pumas I have fitted them in to - they need a couple of mm taking off the outer rim to get them to sit properly in the recessed hole in the dash.

I recently bought the MUD UK USB charger socket that goes in the dash as a Land Rover switch. It has two wires, a RED one and a BLACK one. I presume I have to connect it to the back of the lighter socket that has three wires RED, BLACK and PURPLE. Does RED go to RED and BLACK to BLACK?

Clueless as usual.

Yes, the purple/green will be illumination. Darren

Don’t want to contradict, but I think the red with yellow trace is illumination. Purple wth green is ignition switched power. Sorry if I’m wrong. Have you got a multi meter to check ?

Connect the small red wire on the Mud socket to the red/yellow wire to illuminate the USB when the lights are on
Need to cut the small red wire where it joins the large Red wire on the USB, otherwise it will be illuminated the whole time
