I'm thinking the opposite.
Skateboards will allow a whole host of different bodies to be created for the same platform. That's not possible with unibody vehicles. It's already happening ~ it's basically the step JLR have just announced for Jaguar with it's new platform ~ which I don't think has been named yet? There's already talk of platform providers selling to 2nd parties to "coach build" niche models. Spend more than 10 minutes looking at electric motors and it's a whole new world of tech. Then there's single motor vehicles, dual motor, tri motor, motor in wheel. The opportunities for traction control, how you attach the wheel and what range of suspension motion will be available when not limited by driveshaft angles. The list goes on. All the while, ICE vehicles, at least in true enthusiast models, will be going nowhere. We still have steam powered cars on the road. |

It’s not a great surprise that the best handling, ‘sport/performance’ focused EV so far has come out of the Porsche stable. The first EV that would really tempt me across. At the moment, most people buy an EV because of the government support, dealer deals, green credentials, fashion/trend or a combination of ‘all of the above’. A true petrol head who is looking for a performance car, will still buy ICE. And by performance I’m not talking the straight line speed of the Tesla, but a combination of speed, handling, engine character etc. Also mileage and speedy refuels, as petrol heads are far more likely to just ‘go for a drive’ to enjoy a car, enjoy the road. Perhaps they’d get one backed up by an EM such as Ferrari, but for most ICE offers so much ‘more’ than EV. So it’s of no interest to any manufacturer to make performance EVs. Just look at what most look like. There’s an obsession for them to look like they’re from Tron. However, when laws force all companies to go all-electric, then you’ll start seeing some really exciting EVs. But for the short term, why should they bother. Monsieur Le Grenadier I've not been everywhere, but it's on my list..... 2011 Puma 110DC - Corris Grey |

And so it starts: "Jaguar Land Rover to cut 2,000 salaried jobs in reorganization" "The Tata Motors-owned company has started briefing employees about plans for a reorganization, it said in an emailed statement Wednesday." "JLR has 37,000 employees, including about 30,000 in the U.K. The company said its reorganization will not affect hourly manufacturing workers." https://www.europe.autonews.com/automakers...ganization |

Cars are increasingly becoming 'white goods' & the days of visiting a showroom, bartering with a sales person (one who can do a deal with a handshake as opposed to getting permission from the finance office) are long gone & post covid will probably never return...it scares me how many folk (even on this forum) are prepared to 'click & collect' their new Defender, akin to buying a toaster from Currys etc, without at least trying to do a deal.
Full electric cars are happening whether we like it or not (personally I think politicians should've backed Hydrogen), I fully envisage that my wife, who has zip interest in cars, will soon be driving a leased electric vehicle (why on earth would you buy one?) & I'm sure it will serve her motoring needs very well, shopping, grandkids, elderly mother transport etc, but I'm lucky in that I have a garage, my own drive etc so charging won't be an issue, however, I do feel for those who logistically will simply be unable to park their car anywhere near their dwelling etc. As for me, well with all the brass I'm (allegedly) going to safe on fuel, I'll add another ICE car to my fleet & potter along with a smile on my face knowing that I'm doing my bit but still have a discreet two fingers stuck up to the whole charade of the not so green movement. Since 1973...S1, Air Portable's, Defender's, but only my Wolf TUL HS GS remains Last edited by Fat Cog on 19th Feb 2021 9:06am. Edited 1 time in total |

There are opportunities and positives, definitely - I’m not a Luddite, I’m not selling all my old cars, but I think my next RR will be a supercharged petrol, whilst I still can. |

I think so - a decent engine is a major part of what makes a car appealing; I don’t want an electric 812 Superfast, even if it’s Superfaster. |

Its a polite way of saying to maximise future profits is to rapidly reduce costs. ie the wage bill. still no word of improving reliability, customer service, producing a high volume more affordable vehicle. No, protect Gerry's pay packer and make the company look more attractive for when they sell shares. |

"Jaguar Land Rover will slash its manufacturing capacity by 25% over five years and write off investment in products it’s decided to scrap under new Chief Executive Officer Thierry Bollore. The British carmaker will take a non-cash charge of about 1 billion pounds ($1.4 billion) in the quarter ending in March related to higher previous spending and projects it won’t complete"
"On Friday, the carmaker said it has lowered its breakeven point to about 400,000 vehicles a year, from 600,000." Read more at: https://www.bloombergquint.com/global-econ...n-capacity |
