I asked the dealer today if, when L.R warranty no longer applies, the ERG could be shut off on the standard tune. Answer at this time, don't know but will let me know. This could be an easy fix if possible, but I very much doubt it. Been there on Subaru modifications, costs are needed .

Yes it can be done easily .. as said Pete [Bell auto services] or Ian [IRB Developments] .. both on here, both can do Guns and Landrovers .... anything else is irrelevant.

Alive tuning and BAS are site sponsors and would be more than capable of adding the EGR closed function to a standard tune. However you would need to go to them to get this done or be in possession of an Alien Tech remap interface to download the original fuel file to allow that to be emailed to the tuners so that the file could be modified and returned to you so it can be installed first onto the remap interface and then on to the Defender. The downside of not having the remap interface is that once it is on, it is on for good or until you get a software update at the dealers which would overwrite this upgrade and you would need to pay another visit to the tuners to get it reinstalled.
If you own a BBS MSV2 you can use the FFL to upload the new fuelling files as BAS remaps are sold/supported through the BBS site so you wouldn't need the remap interface. Unplugging the EGR valve will illuminate the MIL lamp and will log DTC's P1402 and P1409. I ran mine for a few months with the EGR plug removed until the Defender was remapped. Click image to enlarge I reinstalled the EGR plug once the defender was remapped (Without EGR closed upgrade) to keep the combustion temp lower with the new fuel file. As I'm sure we all know that the EGR gases being recycled into the Inlet manifold and then into the combustion chamber actually lower the combustion temp therefore reducing power output as a by product of the recycled emissions so a tuned fuel file with the EGR unplugged could theoretically damage the engine and I was not prepared to chance it (warped exhaust manifold,Turbo vane damage both came to mind initially). However once the new EGR closed function became available and had been tested, this takes into account the combustion temp/Boost pressure to compensate for the higher temp burn of not having recycled exhaust emissions entering the combustion chamber. I see benefits and downsides to having the EGR closed all the time, the benefits are a crisper more responsive throttle, an uncoked Inlet manifold and a better fuel return. The downside would be the eventual coking closed of the EGR valve over time meaning if the remap was taken off the chances are the MIL would illuminate and you would get EGR related DTC's. Though for me in the long term, next September that is, the whole assembly is getting removed. The Entreq EGR killer manifold will be fitted along with the removal of the gas mixer pipes and the heat exchanger (EGR cooler) allowing the exhaust manifold to be blanked and the fitting of an EGT Thermocouple direct into the manifold. I am waiting for my EGR remap to arrive from Alive. Thanks Lorryman I did have some concern about the improved combustion with the removal of exhaust gases in the induction system. However I don't really work my vehicle to hard especially in very high temperatures.

Naks, it is not on the website yet. The problem just now is how to apply a software patch (basically a tuned standard file with EGR closed) to disable the MIL. If you have a remap with the EGR closed then this is do able just now as the MIL is taken care of. Unless the remap allows the self clean cycle then the MIL will illuminate after each shut down. I have the Alive tune and the EGR is closed 100% of the time so I know it is bypassed and I have tested this by disconnecting the EGR plug for a couple of days whilst running the remap with no MIL/DTC issues at all.

I see. I have the BAS remap with a standard tune with EGR closed, and a tuned one also with EGR-closed. With the EGR closed the engine is definitely more responsive and you do get a better fuel return.

So the question remains, in a high temp country like Australia/Africa, with temps in the high 30/40 cel at times, towing and loaded to the max, would a flash and EGR closed tune work. A larger intercooler I know is needed, but is this going to solve the high exhust temps even with the cat and centre muffler gone. I am not very with it on oil burner tunes, Subaru WRX was my last toy, so any help would be great

Allan, IME with the BAS remap, the EGTs are lower than with the standard tune. Just one example - from the security boom to my parking bay at home is a 200m idle in 2nd gear. When I get to the boom EGT is usually sitting at 320-330C. By the time I get to my parking bay, EGT sits at 190-200C on standard tune, and 160-170C on remap. However, purely for fuel economy reasons I do not use the tuned map when overlanding, I use the standard tune with closed EGR. Are you sure there is no risk running with unplugged EGR? It seems so simple, I wonder why everybody is not doing so. Other question about EGR: in case of EGR failure, are we stucked? I am soon leaving for a 4-weeks trip to Iceland, and I am considering taking a spare EGR onboard. |
