Just to add that PeterA’s experience was presumbly based on the gearlever being assembled so the ball was riding above the plastic cage in the gearbox. At some point it will have worn/forced its way through the curved upper rim moulding of the plastic cage allowing the gearlever to drop down 15mm.

He might need a new cage, looks like a 10p part so probably a fiver.

During my search for a solution I found out that I have the same gearbox in our Mustang Bullitt. Must be good for a few more hp than the Defender chucks out. Simon D

I just went back to this the other day and found the same as yourself. I had a few attempts at it before I pretty much did the same thing you did. I removed the gear selector and installed the lower plastic cup onto it first before dropping it down in place. All good now.
