300 Tdi into Td5?
I have a 51 plate Td5 that has been wrecked on a site by kids. It must have been made early 2002 because it has the 2002 upgraded center console and other upgrades...
The engine doesn't run although it cranks very healthily....tried most things to get it going but eventually gave up
I'm thinking of swapping it for a 300Tdi as I prefer them for usable torque, throttle response and general fun. A td5 can be fast but with the amount of issues with electrics with em Id prefer a 300tdi. I would still like to keep the td5 dash and center console and so on as I like them compared to 300tdi ones....will i be able to simply hitch up a 300tdi to the r380? anyone know whats involved in doing a conversion like this as i don't really have a clue...any info would be useful.

I think that mechanically it'd be relatively straightforward (new engine mounts, I guess) but electrically it'll be more involved as the gauges and warning lights are operated quite differently. It's not insurmountable though. I suspect that site owner, Martin, may be able to help with some electrickery to bridge the gap between the two. Darren

Why no go for an M57 conversion, ok its a bit more cost but its going to be far better for fun.

Yes i thought it would be ok mechanically but any to do with electrics and td5s is going to be complicated.
I have wondered about an M57 and tbh they aren't much more expensive but I've not found substantial information on them, i know a guy called Liam started a YouTube series on it...did it in much detail which is useful but he's stopped the series now for some reason and all the technical stuff like wiring and ancillaries he hasn't got onto, he's stopped dead at getting the engine in, so all the techy stuff that i would want to find out first I haven't found enough research
I thought a 300tdi would be simpler as they need hardly anything to get them going.

MW Machines 4x4 on Facebook do all the parts, Marcus is the man to speak to. NAF Offroad did one as well (hes on instagram).

The only gauge that has anything to do with the ECU is the temperature, and that can be worked around by modifying the gauge loom to utilise the built-in functionality in the Td5 speedo head to drive a 300Tdi temperature sender. The rest of the electrics don’t really talk to the ECU other than a few bits around the starter/immobiliser etc. and can all be worked around.

Land Rover made 300Tdi-equipped vehicles up until 2006 and the later ones of these of course had the Td5 dash etc. so it’s all either available or can be modified with relative ease.

As much as I love a good Tdi I would just swap another Td5 out of a scrap Disco though.

Another thing is the bellhousing and gearbox input shaft are different, so may be easier to buy a 300Tdi R380 LR Workshop
