MOT fail
Not for any of the usual suspects - registration plates!

Front is pressed metal conforming to BS AU 145d and passed last year. I’m aware that the rules have recently changed, but wasn’t under the impression everyone had 12 months to remove their old plates and switch to the new BS AU 145e compliant ones.

Anyone have any experience/opinions with this? Am wondering whether there was a magic combination of words I should’ve replied with.

Thanks!

I didn’t think anyone was aware of how the new rules were going to be implemented until later in the year including the police?

I fail to see how a standard MOT place has this prior knowledge to fail a MOT. Formerly mao99999

What was it about your plate that caused it to fail the MOT?

I was just told it didn’t comply!

I also had a slightly posey 4D plate on the back - plain black with standard colour background.

“Interestingly” enough the new plates they put on are still printed with the old BS code [finding this an increasingly ironic acronym] so I’m struggling to see what’s changed as per the rules given the old plates passed fine last year.

Live and learn I guess?

Dorset smith Have you a source for the new information?

I was under the impression that the decision was going to happen later in the year and probably going to be on a “grandfather rights “ scenario? Formerly mao99999

Some of the searches threw up a mention of grandfathering-type clauses but so little definitive/clear sources here it’s quite frustrating. Why don’t I, as a vehicle owner and a citizen etc etc have access to clear, definitive information directly from the overseeing authority?!

The more I read into this thread the more I believe I was the MOT station’s “interpretation” of the new 2021 rules in order to up sell some new plates Whistle Formerly mao99999

In relation to pressed and 4D plates, Rev E of BS 145 requires:
"The complete retroreflecting background area of the number plate shall be a continuous and
substantially flat surface, except that an integral raised or depressed border, of width and height not
exceeding 5 mm and 2 mm, respectively, is permitted around the number plate periphery."

Therefore 2d text only.

You say you had a slightly posy rear plate....... would it have passed under the old mot standards or were you always grateful and relieved everytime it went thru it MOT out of interest? 2015 HT XS 90

It had the old BS standard printed on it and I never gave it a second thought! It was as close to a normal plate as a 4D one can get if that makes any sense? Simple black lettering on the yellow BG
