You could argue a fundamental difference between something that will definitely become illegal due to a planned regulation change and something that may just wear out. However, I'd expect a lot more warning and publicity about an issue where it seems the goal posts are to be moved retrospectively. Can it really be correct that virtually every car owner in the country will be required to buy new number plates? Darren

There is something decidedly odd about this whole story, and my suspicion is that there is something about the OP's number plate that actually made it illegal under that current rules (i.e., spacing or some other non-compliance, or damage such as delamination or scuffing).
Never in the history of the MoT Test has there been a situation where a component which was compliant with explicit regulations one year has been retrospectively made illegal the next, it I think it likely that there would be an outcry. If every car on the road younger than 30 years has to have new plates to pass the MoT, I am sure we would have heard about it. |

The new requirements under BS AU 148e are contained in a Statutory Instrument. It says " This instrument updates the British Standard to BS AU 145e
so that a new or replacement registration plate fixed to a vehicle on or after the 1st September 2021, must comply with it. " The SI can be found here https://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2020/1...363_en.pdf It also has rules about using old style black and white pressed plates |

Precisely. So if you need a new plate, it must comply with the latest regs, however you only need a new plate if there is something wrong with the old one, and there is nothing inherently wrong with a plate which complies with the old regs but not the new.

^ THIS!
I’ve just checked the last of the 2020 70 plate trucks at work and all have BS AU 145d no. plates (GB EU logos ironically ) I don’t believe for one second any of these vehicles will fail an MOT when due. I think the last few posts pretty much provide a very succinct description of how I feel about the whole thing. I just had very little appetite to argue at the time, and some old plates that are perfectly intact still...
What I REALLY want to do is post photos...can’t say there’s a whole lot of point once I’ve blurred them out though |
