Do you leave the glow plugs on for a full cycle before starting? How long is the light in the cab on for on each cycle?
The glow plugs should operate during the warm up phase, so there's a few things to check there. |

Hi Supacat,
Yes, leave the glow plugs to cycle as per normal till the light goes out. Has only been an issue in this recent cold snap, when it’s warmer I don’t have a problem. I suspected a main battery issue, hence got the scanner out, but got these permanent circuit/range performance DTC’s. The 2.2 has a control module that powers each heater plug individually and I think can detect when any one or more of the heaters are not working. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

I don’t think failing, or failed glow plugs would cause a “dip in revs”. I’m sure I’ve read, on here something else, possibly temp sensor that causes dip in revs after starting.

Hi all, thanks for your help so far.
Landy Andy - reading those posts about VCV seems a similarish fault, but would failing VCV produce glow plug DTC’s? Engine is fine when it starts (and starts OK when it’s not freezing) Supacat - thanks for all that info. I’m going to have a look tomorrow at the wiring when this icy wind lets up. I was thinking that errors may show for the glow plugs because the engine is stalling during their operation. In my experience glow plugs work or they don’t. They aren’t “smart” things, but obviously sensors that control them are these days. And once a diesel is started it wouldn’t stall or alter the revs of an engine, by stopping operation of the glow plugs, again, possibly the sensors associated with them, but not the glow plugs themselves. Think of diesels that don’t have glow plugs.
