OK, slight side question as I’d only go the diesel route but are the 2.0d cars non-MHEV?

The 2.0 I4 engines are not MHEV
The 3.0 I6 engines are MHEV |

Hmmmmm, that puts a new perspective on things. One less system to go wrong.

Besides the simplicity you also get lower gearing in the differentials for the P300 as opposed to the six and increased space in the underfloor compartment in the rear where the MHEV system is installed. I have about 2600 miles on my P300 now and there is no lack of power or acceleration with the 295 HP four cylinder. I think the lower gearing will be a big advantage off road. Plus 18" wheels for a better selection of tires.

The fact that nobody - not Bowler, Compomotive, Redbourne, TuffAnt, NOBODY - has come up with an 18" wheel to fit over the factory brakes of the P400 (without modifications to the brakes themselves, which has obvious warranty and possible safety implications) is a huge, giant, almost unforgivable knock against the P400 for those of us interested in off-roading it. Land Rover should have thought that one through a lot more before going to market with their most unstoppable 4x4 that can't take a wheel smaller than 19".
The trim level with all the goodies I was interested in was only available with a P400 engine here in the US anyway, so deciding between P300 and P400 was kind of a moot point for me when I ordered my 2020 HSE 110 last year. Plus, coming from the last wonderful, silky smooth V8-powered petrol Disco/LR4, downsizing to a smallish 4-cylinder making 25% less HP felt like too much of a compromise... I love the P400 engine as a powerplant and don't miss my old V8 one bit, but I am disappointed at the total lack of an aftermarket 18" wheel for this model - or the next best thing, a wider selection of 19" tires from BFG, Nitto, Toyo, etc., that could fit the new Defender. We only get two measly choices from Goodyear that no tire shop in the world will ever stock in that size, so you'll be waiting a while if you are ever stuck somewhere and in need of a suitable replacement to get back home. 2020 NAS Defender 110 HSE 5-seater / Silver / Khaki / Black Pack / Black Roof / Satin Film / Cold Pack / Off-Road Pack / Advanced OR Pack / Comfort + Convenience Pack / Sirius + HD radio / HUD / Meridian Surround |

L320 RRS had the same problem with smaller wheel sizes on more powerful versions, you would think JLR might have learned from that. Why P300.?
Price, cheapest petrol engine Weight, lightest Defender available Full time All Wheel drive, no reaction time to engage front Diff gearing 4.11, better off road and easier to go with slightly bigger tires. ( 32,6") Just my 2 cents... No Mud flaps for my 90.! ----------------------------------------- P300 S MY21 on air, adv.+ offroad pack, DRL+fog, Dinamica Suedecloth + Ebony headliner/Cross Beam- Many Mods.. |

Yeah, English cars don't have the best reputation of reliabilty with even simple electrical systems in cars.

English? It’s not even British............. at least it’s not Scottish.......... of course the Scots only make perfection according to the wee woman in charge (just don’t mention the ferries or the airport) Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come

Actually, according to JLR, the Ingenium engines are designed, engineered and made in England.
(I'm not being jingoistic, just relaying some JLR info I saw somewhere). I'm seriously considering this engine simply because of the reduced complexity and the fact that my last 3 diesels have all either broken down (1 x Freelander/LR2 and 1 x BMW) or gone into limp mode (1 x BMW) due to EGR problems. |

Why the P300 over the D250?
Price is ultimately the same (I think the petrol works out about £500 more). 0-60 of the P300 is quicker, MPG of the D250 is better. |

I’m not a fan of modern diesels. They take ages to warm up, are noisey, and the AdBlue systems are a pain. I’ve had issues with it on my pickup, and all the excavators we run have it and have all had issues at some point. Most have been within warranty but one wasn’t and that was expensive. So the P300 was my only consideration and I can’t wait to take delivery. Glad the OP is getting on well with his 👍

JLR are British, the engines are made in the uk etc and I would say there is just as much reliability as any American made in terms of electrics etc
My point on mhev is long term, like all electric cars, you have a complex system that will wear and loose performance etc and ends up being a whole extra system requiring specialist involvement or expensive battery replacement etc As for modern Diesel engines, they are quiet, smooth etc and ultimately if you are doing a lot of miles far better than a petrol. I’ve not noticed long warm up times, but between pre heater, engine heaters etc that doesn’t need to be a thing Mike |
