Charge light flicker at high revs.
Hi. Any chance of a “quick fix” of the generator if the charge light flickers at high revs...been advised to buy a Denso....but the defender has been draining all available funds since I aquired it....It is a Td5 - 2002. It keeps the battery in good shape - I see the flicker as a warning of things to come😅

I don't suppose that the drive belt is slipping at high revs without it squealing, how old is the belt or is it worn? Also try swapping warning light bulbs just in case it is on its way out. Jeff

if the battery is fully charged then maybe the alt is not charging it and hence the flickering?

whats the actual battery voltage? Cheers

Thanks 👍 The belt is worn - but did not think of it as there was no squealing...but it needs to be changed anyway.
Voltage on batt is 12.8. when engine is at idle it is 14.7

whats the voltage when the light if flickering?

When we built comp trucks with twin 100A plus alternators when the batts were fully charged the light would flickers or show very dimly, the latter being a more accurate description as the alts werent putting out much output as system didnt need it.

14.7 seems a little high.

try measuring voltage at tickover across battery compared to back of alternator.

then turn on lights and any other electrical loads what happens to the reading?

turn them off what then happens?

Try same at higher >1600rpm engine revs. let us know Cheers
