We bought ours with a view to either keeping it longer term, especially given diesels are likely to become rarer and long term I would rather have an ice than an electrical system, plus the battery technology will be expensive then be replaced when they realise it’s not the way to go...

I’m not sure how the defender will devalue, be interesting to see, especially with no real deals and pcp

Engine wise, I remind myself that the last large engine defender was my v8 90...after that we have had 2.4/2.2s so the d240 is fine, it’s been good in some of the other LR products...yes we have the v6 and v8 disco/rr etc...not seeing the urgency/need in the defender Mike

I bought my D4 outright in 2013. HSE Lux wasn’t cheap at the time. It was my work car until I retired in 2018. I sold it privately for £14200. This was more than the dealer offered me.

I had it for nearly 8 years, it had 119k on it. Average depreciation worked out at £5200 per annum, or £437 per month. Yes it was heavily loaded towards the first 3 years depreciation wise.

If I had pcp’d it, it would have cost me much more. I don’t think I could have made that up by investing the capital elsewhere.

I have bought the Defender outright, and intend to keep it for as long as I can. My mileage will be much lower, so if the value at 3 years is acceptable I could be tempted out of it.

Also it depends what happens with developing ev, fuel cell, or whatever technology. Like it or not, we will all be made to go that way eventually, and it will be the tax system that is used, and that might ultimately affect the value of cars. 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV

I bought mine outright too, I retired in March 2020 and it’s the first car in more than 20 years I’ve bought outright. Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come
2020 D240 1st Edition in Pangea Green with Acorn interior. Now gone - old faithful, no mechanical issues whatsoever ever but the leaks and rattles all over the place won’t be missed!

I bought each of my three kids a brand new car (Kia Picanto, Skoda Fabia, VW Up! respectively) after they'd learnt to drive on old bangers (a Punto that was given to me 'cos it had failed its MOT and a Fiesta) and thrashed 'em for a year. The eldest PX'd the Picanto for a Nissan Juke on lease and has had two new SUVs since, the other two will lease when their own cars become unreliable.

They'll NEVER invest long-term, on the basis that anything bought now will sooner rather than later be obsolete or illegal to drive in cities.

They're not wrong, much as I'd love another (New) Defender I fear that in a couple of years the ones being marketed now won't be able to be given away. And as for worrying about what's under the bonnet of a 21st century vehicle, the days of DIY tinkering on the drive or in the garage are long gone.

In some ways this is why a PCP with a balloon makes sense, as it protects you if the bottom drops out of market...

...as it did at end of 2008 when I was at the end of 3 year PCP on my first D3 - I simply gave it back because it was worth £4K less than the balloon payment.

I doubt they will use the tax system on ice cars...history shows they don’t tend to do that (think tax on say a 2000 car v a new one) congestion charges are the only thing and with more ev the problem will change and go away

It will be ages before ev becomes a thing and even further before they flood a second hand market and then I seriously question issues with batteries at 5-10yrs + which creates long term problems for those who buy much older cars (plus I don’t believe ev is the long term way to go)

I know the hype drives it though...there will still be a lot of the world not on ev...if we can ever go anywhere Mike
