Body off what? There is no chassis. Could be engine out instead though. 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV

Hmmm... it does appear that the 3L engine fills the space under the bonnet considerably more than the 2L engine - you could drop a random spanner into that 3L engine bay and its not going to go down... at all. Steve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)

At least you do t have to take the oil cap off to pull the cover!
It does look very full, but al lot of it is big components that look like they will come out relatively easily. I suppose when you get it up on a ramp and remove the lower covers it may be easier. Hopefully won’t be much need to take it all to bits! 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV 1966 S2a 109 aka Betsy |

Realistically does anyone expect to keep theirs outside of a LR factory or extended warranty with home maintenance? 1951 80" S1 2.0

/\ that’s a great point. I’m sure some will be buying outright but how many will be bought on PCP type deals and handed back after 3 years?

Great point familymad, how many owners will be thinking this vehicle is a keeper, how many first owners will see them in use 20 - 30+ years time?
I am not shooting down the vehicle, I am growing to like them, but that something is now missing e.g. “it’s a keeper” Jumped ship to reliability - Mitsubishi L200 Puma 90 XS - Sold D3 - 2.7 S x2 (both Sold) Freelander 2 HSE - Sold Freelander 1 - Sold Disco 2 - Sold |

Since 2011 we have leased a family hack For my wife’s car. I don’t mean PCP but PCH. It’s just the easiest car ownership. Find best value washing machine (car), pick terms and deposit and car is delivered. Insure and fuel only for 2 years.
So last ones were 2013 Nissan Leaf on a 1x23 10k pa at £123 a month 2015 Nissan Leaf on a 1x23 10k pa at £127 a month 2018 Skoda Octavia on a 3x23 10k pa at £157 a month inc maintenance (mistake as it only needed one service) 2021 Skoda Octavia on a 6x23 10k pa at £166 a month So I’m paying £4500-5750 every 24 month period for a new motor and it’s maintenance and hassle free. They even pay the car tax. I look at the pure lease deals on Defenders against the drop in money people are experiencing and don’t think I would put private cash into one. Just borrow it. We could have all made $1m on Tesla shares by sticking £10k in at the start. Some people have lost that on their 2020 Defender already.... So it’s a different way of ownership but not worse. I honestly don’t believe my kids will ever buy a car outright in their lifetimes and I’d argue that’s better use of hard earned cash. If you are bored then leasing.com and leaseloco are good Sunday picks. Just don’t be fussy on spec, look at best value and lowest overall cost over term. 1951 80" S1 2.0 1995 110 300TDI 1995 90 300TDI |

I’ve bought mine to keep. It’s not like my old Defenders where they can be maintained in perpetuity by just rebuilding them every 20 years, but I will keep it until it becomes either too expensive or too difficult to keep going.
Leasing a box-on-wheels every few years is good financial sense and alright for some, but life is too short to drive a boring car. |

I have had between 20 to 30 new cars on a mixture of PCP and PCH over the years.
I will pay for the Defender on order on a 4 year PCP with the intention of buying at the end of the PCP (depending on experience over the 4 years) and keeping the car. I also plan to retire (early) about the same time... I have progressively bought more and more expensive cars... for sure this one at £70K is THE most expensive... but you can not take it with you and you have to spend your money on something. I agree - on what's said above - about driving something you like - not just something cheap... but its all personal choice. As for Service - for sure through warrantee - it will be dealer. For thinks like brakes and oil change - I can and will do all that.. outside warranty and maybe inside warrantee (if needed like on the Mini Countryman previously) Anything that's throwing codes - can be easily diagnosed - and then depends on what - can do it or dealer it. Also as I get older - I feel less and less like climbing under cars... but have done so for the last 37 years... for family and in the early years extra money.. Its a case of lets see how the Defender behaves. I am buying the 3.0 D300 now when they are available.... because I am not sure in 4 years time they will be... Then the plan would be to have also a smaller run around - that will probably full EV or Fuel Cell (if it comes) that we use for the shorter runs when I retire.. and we swap the wife's Karoq... But that will all hopefully be in 4 or 5 years time... so need to wait and see... lots can change in 5 years... |

I've always bought 1-2 year old cars that have suffered the front-end of the depreciation curve. My current Merc S350 was £70K new and I paid half price at 18 months old. I've had it 5 years now, far longer than many other cars I've owned because it still feels in good order, has just needed route servicing (£430/yr) and I'm struggling to find a better alternative.
Depreciation has been the biggest cost; around £23k. Still under £400/month though, including road tax. If I could buy a 1-2 year old Defender (or FFRR) for half price and it caused me no trouble then I would do the same... |
