Rear wiper blade replacement - help needed please
Hi all,

Defender 110XS, 2013. New owner.

Just trying to replace my rear wide blade and assuming (from internet search) that I need to take the spare wheel of the back door? Unfortunately it hasn’t been removed in 7 years and the nuts are seized...

So, is it possible to change the wiper blade without removing the wheel? I tried but didn’t want to use to much force and break the wiper arm.

Otherwise I am going to have to try and free up the spare wheel nuts.

Yes it’s possible with the spare wheel still fitted.
You need the wiper up vertical, it’s a pig but possibly.

Could try turning on and off the rear wiper via the ignition switch to a position on the glass that might allow you to change the wiper blade.

If that doesn’t work then it looks like you need some penetrating oil on those wheel nuts. Probably best to get these nuts moving again anyway in case you need the spare wheel because of a puncture etc. Better sorted at home rather than at the side of the road.

As above, turn wiper switch on.
Turn ignition off with the wiper arm at
12 ‘o’ clock position.
That will allow you the room to remove it whilst leaving the rear wheel well alone as it is.

How about sorting out the seized nuts so that if you get a flat you can actually use the spare. Then worry about the rear wiper ?
Just a thought.

Thank you all and yes, great advice on the wheel nuts. In fact it is still on the original tyres (only 16,000 miles and has been kept in doors) despite being eight years old, so I will check all of the wheels to prevent any future issues in case of puncture.

Check all your tyres, regardless of mileage and being kept indoors 8 years and they maybe showing signs of perishing on the outer rim better to be safe than sorry. This was probably my first newbie job many moons ago. I ended up taking mine to my local independent and asked them if they could free the spare wheel nuts ( rather embarrassing to be honest). After warning me that this was common and that the weld that attaches the stud to the carrier could fail out came a huge breaker bar. "Bang" and they were free. My first DIY tool was a breaker bar Very Happy . And so it has continued with numerous new tools all of which are essential, the Mrs has given up asking Rolling with laughter

A quick thank you for all the advice on this.

Borrowed a long torque wrench today, wheel nuts loosened straight away, wheel came off, rear wiper blade replaced and all back together. I checked all the other wheel nuts whilst at it.

Really appreciate the support and giving me the confidence to have a go. Thank you!
