2.4 TDCI Starter Motor/Starting Issues
Hi all,

Just looking for some help/guidance regarding the starter motor/starting issue I've got with my 2.4 110 CSW. The car is a county spec, but has got a key fob to immobilise the car.

To cut a long story short, was out and about in the Landy today and it was running perfectly fine. Eventually, when heading home I went to start the engine and there was nothing. All the correct lights and gauges lit up, radio on etc but when turning the key there was nothing other than one single click of the starter motor. Managed to get it started (by pure luck I think - I simply locked and unlocked the car with the key fob) and get it home, where it now won't start unless being bump started.

I had the starter motor replaced not long ago (albeit for a refurbished Bosch unit) and had no issues since its been fitted. The only thing I noticed was that it was a wet in the engine bay around it from earlier when I went through a bit of water in the road so unsure if that could have had any effect.

Connected the jump leads up and nothing changed there so almost certain its nothing electrical with the battery etc, but from the reading I've done it could be a number of things.

So I'm thinking it could be a faulty starter motor, but as mentioned any help/guidance is greatly appreciated - bit of a newbie to this! Laughing

Many thanks,
Sam

Hi Sam,
Easiest way is to start checking the basics. Drop test battery to check it's not on it's way out. Lots of videos on youtube on how to do this. Then check the earth connections from battery and starter. Poor earth will often show up exactly as you describe. Good luck Cool

A common problem with the TDCi is that the relays under the O/S front develop loose contacts. A very easy check is to make sure that these a really tight in their sockets. If either the main or starter relay has a poor connection the vehicle won't start.

If any are loose, you can introduce a slight bend in the spade tag on the relay to tighten the connection.

Check the feed going to the starter. Mine had split, but was still connected. Sometimes enough voltage would go through to get it started, other times it wouldn't. I tore my hair out trying different things with immobiliser etc.

Many thanks for all of your replies Smile

I had a check of the battery and all the relays and all seemed fine with those, a quick look of the wiring/earths and I couldn’t see anything obvious there so bit the bullet and went for a new genuine Bosch starter motor. Got it fitted today and starts right up first time!

Valuable lesson learnt - buy cheap, buy twice Laughing

Thanks for the help!
