That prototype is a very different animal. It's essentially a Range Rover chassis modified with a Series LR rear crossmember and various other odds and sods to accept Series LR body panels, which have been cut down (hacked, in this case) to suit. As far as I can tell from a quick search of pictures, they all used the same panel regardless of engine type, certainly up to 1988. I'd guess they changed with the introduction of the 200tdi. The starting handle hole did indeed last into Defender.
They probably kept a few front panels for the 2.5 petrol Defender but almost no-one ordered one, so they may have used the last few on some early 200Tdi's. Despite the hole in the front panel, there is no starter dog or handle support on this early 2.5 petrol Defender. Click image to enlarge [/b] |

Interesting, thanks for the update on SH holes.
I miss starting handles! Many a time I've started my S1s with the handle and they're so useful for any maintenance activities that require the engine to be turned over. |

I know that all the series and early range rover had the hole in the bumper but I've never heard of anything after the 2.25 with a starting handle. If you look right into the hole on a 2.5 you see where the handle hook thing would be bolted in if it were a 2.25. Since the 2.5 was related to the 2.25 I assume that it would be easy to equip a 2.5 with a hand start system by just swapping the bolt that can be seen through the hole for that of a 2.25.
Edit: Yes, the 2.5 petrol didn't sell very well. It didn't have the fame of the 2.25 nor the power (and bragging rights) of the V8 so even though it was quite reliable and powerful enough to do almost anything the V8 could do, the two engines burned the same amount of fuel. The handle hook thing in question is #503665 in the image. |
