Early 110...sort of
Whilst braving the wilds of the Sainsburys Click and Collect queue, I found myself behind an odd looking early 110 with a Dormobile lifting roof:

When the owner opened the back to load his shopping, I realised that it had Series LR windscreen, so I jumped out to pump him for details Laughing

It turns out it was something of a bitsa - yes, an early 110 but with Series 2a bulkhead and roof salvaged from another vehicle, and a 300tdi engine.

So not one for the purists but I loved the ingenuity of it. Darren

Old school ‘hybrid’ by the looks of it. Nice homemade rear crossmember. Shocked

It's rare to see a split-screen coiler!

Some true prototypes are split screen coilers.
The few survivors have been rescued from the scrapyard where they were sent for scrapping by the Factory, after their engines and gearboxes were removed.

For a brief moment, I did wonder if it might be something a bit special but in reality of course, E reg is far too late for those sorts of prototypes.

Could it had been a prototype that was registered in 1988? But then how did it get a Series 2 bulkhead when Series 3 was already in production.

Edit: Curious what it takes to put a 109 roof on a 110. Unless the tub is a 109 as well, and modified to fit the eye brows. Perhaps explained by the rear cross member. Who knows. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

This one's definitely not a prototype. It's just an amalgamation of a IIa Dormobile with a 110.

Fitting a 109 roof on a 110 is just a nut and bolt exercise once the windscreen issue has been resolved. A 110 tub is the same size as that of a 109. Darren

Have to say I do find it interesting.

I think the owner is wrong in saying it's a IIA bulkhead. Looks SIII to me.

Not just the door hinges, but that peek through the rear door towards the front, seems to show a SIII bulkhead.

And the rad grille and Land Rover badge?

Ah, no, it's definitely a IIa bulkhead. The windscreen hinges give it away but I also managed a look inside and confirmed it. No pictures unfortunately, as the poor guy was trying to load his shopping whilst I faffed around Laughing

I commented on the grill too, but it really is just a bit of weld mesh cut to size and screwed on through the 110 grill fixing holes. Darren

Rear cross member has a passing resemblance to one of the prototypes:

I believe that the grille panel is V8 since it has the starting handle hole. Was that present on the early 4-pots, I didn't think so?

I love the rear wheel arch cut-outs on the 100" !
