Opinions on which intercooler upgrade to go for.
It won't be tuned just yet as i need to upgrade the air intake ( non RAI ) with possibly this; https://www.nakatanenga.de/en/vehicle-equi...-td4?c=312 and fit a capture can plus replace the intercooler pipes. They all seem to be the same size, but is there a real world difference in the products? I'm not looking to race the truck, just allowing it to breath better and increase torque overall when it's tuned. |

there is a good write up on here from Pete Bell that would support his product with some testing data
unfortunately each tuner plugs there own product but I could never find a real world comparison that shows flow rates and temperature drop DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS, I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy |

Well I have almost the same Nakatanenga air intake upgrade (but with RAI). Also removed both silencers from the exhaust system (unnecessary weight and back pressure) and went on to recently apply Pete Bell´s 170 hp ecu flash. I thought the intake and exhaust already had freed up the motor considerably, but the flash has just changed things completely. So much more enjoyable to drive. The motor now revs enthusiastically to 4000 rpm, and the pull when floored is almost V8 like.
The higher temperatures at the catalysator (up to 650 degrees, monitored on an Ultra Gauge running off the OBD II) have encouraged me to order the intercooler and hoses, which Pete delivered a couple of weeks ago. Not yet fitted, but the intercooler looks excellent and will be more than welcome, at the very latest, once towing a trailer next summer. 1998 Tdi 90 SW, 2008 Td4 90 SW, 2012 2.2 90 SW, 2" raised Trailmaster/Terrafirma Heavy Track Raids, 255 MT´s, Recaro CS´s, anorak, wellingtons |

My belief is I won’t see much in improvement until a tune releases the ECU from its restrictions on the engine.
Air intake is being dealt with, intercooler is next, but is there a need for an exhaust upgrade as such? Which parts are recommended upgrading on the exhaust, just removing the back box’s? How loud was it after that was done? |

You wont get much benefit from an intercooler without adjusted mapping and will allow you to run much higher boost and a larger turbo should you want one.
You will see an improvement from a less restrictive intake. The stock LR system is terrible. Exhaust, nothing major but the more freely flowing the quicker the turbo will spool. Instagram @defender_ventures Empire Tuning - Agent |

I've had the BAS Hi-flow intercooler for 3+ years and no issues. Great workmanship and looks amazing (not that you can see it now). No issues, highly recommend. James

I have just talked to Pete at BAS about my tune we installed a couple weeks ago asking about an intercooler , he said you will not get the full power of the tune if your running the engine very hot , the tune will restrict some of the extra power when very hot so that’s good to know , I best get an intercooler soon then

Another vote Pete and BAS. Their tune 170, intercooler and hoses all top notch. Service excellent and soooo easy to deal with.

I’ve had a few failed Allisport products in the past.
I have BAS’s new intercooler and it’s a very nicely finished product indeed. |

On a 2.2, with cat and dpf, removing both silencers makes little difference to the exhaust note, but it makes sense to reduce the back pressure as much as possible. Removing the front one, the larger of the two, was my first priority. However, from what I´ve read on here the fit quality of some suppliers is pretty varied. Can´t remember where mine came from. It needed some coaxing to line up, but was acceptable. I had a custom stainless rear section (deleting the rear silencer) made up, exiting through the bodywork. When I first had the exhaust fitted, I could hear the difference. However, it was minimal. 1998 Tdi 90 SW, 2008 Td4 90 SW, 2012 2.2 90 SW, 2" raised Trailmaster/Terrafirma Heavy Track Raids, 255 MT´s, Recaro CS´s, anorak, wellingtons |

I have a straight through pipe on my 2.2 and it makes no difference at all to sound, except when the dpf is regenerating. It is a very noticeable improvement in performance though, the engine revs much more freely and it’s noticeably smoother.
I have Pete’s 170 map and as I don’t tow or carry much load he said not to bother with the intercooler. |
