The thicker the bar the less roll you’ll have and better road handling but at the cost of less bump compliance and flex as it effectively stops the axle twisting so much from the chassis. If you hit a bump on one wheel it will be harder for that axle to move and for the shock to be absorbed because the anti roll bar will be trying to hold it still.
I personally find the standard anti roll bar on my 90 the best balance between comfort /on road/ off road ability. I reduced the roll and wallowyness with bilstein b6 shocks. Which again will improve road handling but comes at the cost of bump compliance. I may stand corrected but I don’t think the firmer shocks have as much of a detrimental effect on off road flex as a stiff anti roll bar does. There’s no one size fits all with suspension set ups you just have to decide what you mainly use the car for and create the setup which fits. A lot of it is trial and error. |

That’s interesting, thank you, I wasnt aware of the impact on bump compliance so may even leave as is, definitely glad I asked

thats also my understanding. i run standard dia ARBs front and rear (the front makes the biggest difference) and fitted medium duty OME shocks, rides and handles well on and off the tarmac (for what it is) Cheers James 110 2010 XS Utility 130 2011 M57 bespoke Camper 90 2010 Hardtop 90 M57 1988 Hardtop |

I think generally new shocks are the first things people go for in terms of improving ride and handling. There’s been a recent thread on here comparing fox to bilstein. Then after the shocks if your ride is too firm fit softer springs... if you still have too much roll for your liking fit a stronger anti roll bar or firmer springs. Then after you’ve spend £££’s realise that it’s still a defender

Only heard good things about them
![]() I would hold off the arb until you’ve got the springs settled in and see what you want to change. An interesting recent thread about spring/damper combos is this https://www.defender2.net/forum/post870222.html#870222 |

I fitted the 25mm one to my 90 12. I the ago, it is excellent.
You cannot fit a 30mm one to the back of a 90 due to the 90 ARB clamp arrangement. There are conversions to allow the use of a 110 rear clamp setup on the 90 but they look a right bodge to me. |

I´m still loving the 25 mm ARB´s I fitted to my relatively lightly equipped 90 SW a few months back. However I´d come from not having any at all, and the difference was night and day.
https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic75137.html The Extreme 4x4 set uses poly bushings which are a little denser than the standard. I was worried about the suspension becoming too stiff (as I already have Heavy Track Raid shocks) but nothing of the sort. 1998 Tdi 90 SW, 2008 Td4 90 SW, 2012 2.2 90 SW, 2" raised Trailmaster/Terrafirma Heavy Track Raids, 255 MT´s, Recaro CS´s, anorak, wellingtons |
