Have you checked all the fuses? Bit of a long short but worth a try, especially F22. Peter

Well she's running again...it was fuel, although I hadn't ran out.

I assume with it sitting still ticking over for a long time the fuel had settled (rather than the normal splashing about) and caused a block or something.

My indy came round took off fuel filter which was virtually empty. Used a pump to bleed the system and all good now.

very strange.

Have good look at your fuel pipe work and connectors to and from the fuel tank and filter head

make shore fuel pipe work connectors lock in place

have seen this

1 fuel fuel pipe work connectors inlet to fuel filter had been removed to drain fuel from tank with hand pump and not replaced properly (fuel theft court red handed ) and engine drained fuel out the filter

2 fuel fuel pipe work connectors inlet to the filter head snapped off and engine drained fuel out the filter

3 and other thing vacuum in the fuel tank vent blocked

2.4 is sucking fuel from the tank. If there is a leakage, air will leak in the fuel lines, rather than fuel leak out, causing the problem. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Since you mentioned a drained fuel filter, you can concentrate your search for the cause of your woes, at least for now, from the fuel filter back towards the fuel tank.

If all your connections are sound and correct, we can now isolate the issues to your tank.

Is your fuel tank full? If it is not, note what level it's at then tank up to full and see if the truck will start after properly priming the fuel system. We'll go from there.

Not necessarily I guess. If you have an air leak somewhere high near the engine, fuel can siphon back to the fuel tank?
Saw a similar issue on a Citroen (but same fuel connections as the Defender). Park it uphill, and is enough to siphon the fuel off the lines over an 8hr working day. Found that to be the O rings in the fuel connectors had degraded.

I would unclip each fuel connector and smear some grease, see if it improves (grease may seal the air leak). 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing
