The Blackwolf is correct, there are many references to special tools and also some incorrect info in the Manual
That being said without it I would have struggled to replace my head gasket. I improvised for many of the special tools and so far so good. I will also replace the coolant pump, just not sure which to make buy, I see many Britpart ones but I have seen mixed reviews about Britpart. As no point in buying an original as they are obviously not so great. |

Everybody !!
Thanks for all the good advise. I will start by putting on the fan spacer and the new thermostat. If that dosent work, i will work my way through your advises and se what solves the problem. In the end, i will check the cylinder head, as i doubt that it could already be blown again. Defender 110 Puma 2.4 tdci |

I replaced my water pump and unfortunately it didn't make any difference.
Alex, did you get around to replacing the thermostat? |

That's not good news Greyman,
I think between us all here we have changed nearly everything. I will be starting mine soon after the head gasket replacement, Im struggling to bleed the fuel lines. Once started I will update if I still have the overheating issue. Kev |

For 13 years, I have owned a defender 130-2.4 (2007MY with a camper cell) that I have often driven in difficult places such as Mongolia, Africa or the Americas (from Alaska to Ushuaïa)
The engine started to heat up and went into limped mode for the first time at 50,000 km in the Dolomites in Italy . After looking on the forums for the possible causes and how to manage them (change the thermostat, test the cylinder head gasket, clean the radiator, ...), I decided to live with it. I bought a Scangauge which allows me to constantly monitor the engine temperature and in contraining situations (long climbs in 6th grade, mountain ports ....), I retrograde so that the temperature does not exceed 105 to 108 ° C because I know that at 112 ° c, it goes into limped mode. Currently my Defender has 360.000km on the clock and is still working fine. Only clue, when it tends to heat up, I notice a slight consumption of the coolant and I still have not found the cause (??). |

Hi Mongolia...
That is so funny, i also found out mine drinks a portion of the coolant. Actually a year ago when i found out that i had to top up coolant, i putted cardboard under the car to find out where the coolant was coming from. Not 1 single drop on the cardboard in 3 days... Funny that you mention it ! Defender 110 Puma 2.4 tdci |

Thanks for that!
I've been paying very close attention to whats been happening when during a drive and while i'm considering changing the rad and thermostat, I'm not convinced its those as when I stop the temp starts to drop rapidly. The caveat to that is that I don't know if that would happen anyway regardless of whether those parts were working or not. I bled the system again today and will test it out tomorrow as my heater is blowing hot and cold. I might do a full flush as I've only done a partial when I changed the water pump. |

^^^ That is usually a symptom of a low coolant level or possibly an airlock in the system. Mine does this without fail of the coolant level is lower than the bottom quarter of the reservoir.

When the coolant was drained was it bled when put back in, in the correct quantity?
There is a Workshop Manual procedure for it and involves opening the coolant drain bleed valve and various other procedures. It is not quite as simple as draining and simply refilling, you then need to go though the bleeding procedure. You don’t need any particular specialist tools and it’s not difficult but is required to be done. This may explain any air locks as Blackwolf suggested could be possible. But if the system was bled when parts were replaced then it may not be that. I did this very procedure when I changed the Waterpump on mine a few years ago. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R 🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴🇮🇪🇺🇸⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |

My heat was much better today.
I carried out the full procedure when I changed my water pump the other week but my heating was still not quite right. I bled the system again yesterday on start up, then drove around until it was up to temp, then carefully bled the system again using a cut up waterbottle for protection and to catch run-off. I then left it overnight. When I checked it again today it was about an inch down from the cold level so topped up and it seemed to be better. I going to change the VCV this week as looking back through my records I'm now not sure it was done when I thought it was! |

If the fluid level went down a bit, then that definitely tells you there was an air lock in the system. Keep an eye on it as there might be a bit more yet.
If you can a longer run may help. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R 🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴🇮🇪🇺🇸⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |
