TD5 Not startin!
Hi all
New to this website and just bought my first Land Rover. A defender 90 hardtop Td5. The car was left on a building site as it didn't run, and kids trashed it, taking out the ignition barrel and center console and generally destroying it😠. My plans are to get it running, replace the rear cross member (fortunately the only bad bit of rust) and get it an MOT. Then in the future, a complete rebuild, respray to bonatti grey and all the bells and whistles.
At the moment, the engine does not run. It cranks over healthily but does not start. I have replaced the fuel pump and checked the pressure, running over 4 bar which should be fine. I have replaced the Fuel filter and taken out and cleaned the small mesh filter in between the Fuel pressure regulator and the engine block but she still wont start. I need a new plan of attack as i know i could spend hundreds on the fuel system and it could be some tiddly little sensor stopping it from starting. Next I'm thinking to get a new crank position sensor but if that doesn't work i don't know what I'll do. The ECU is fine as i have taken it out and tried it on my friends td5 so i know it works. There is no trace of fuel from the exhaust but it does crank very healthily. Have purged the fuel system time and time again and after purging she roars to begin with as if she's gonna start then dies a little off the revs and just cranks. I got her running on Eazi start but it was very rough and don't want to do it again as i know it isn't any good for them.

Ideas please? Would appreciate anyone's help.

Could be a dicky starter motor. Might be worth a try with a bump start? When my starter played up it would turn over but not start, but would with a bump/tow start. 1999 Defender TD5 110

Have you verified or checked the following:
1- Oil in the ECU plug?
2- Faulty crank position sensor?

Sorry should have mentioned that
I tried bump starting and nothing changed...pretty sure the starter motor is ok...it almost screams to me of a fuel problem

1. No there isn't any oil in the ECU plug, checked the ECU plenty of times...
2. That seems to be my next plan of attack so hopefully that should fix it...

It could be lots of things, unfortunately. Given your description, it could be damaged wiring but it could equally just need the immobiliser re-syncing with the fob. Darren

Have you checked the ecu status? Sounds like it could possibly be that the 10as needs repairing to the ecu. Have you got access to a nanocom? They’ll usually attempt a little fire at the very beginning then just crank and crank. Have you had any diagnostics on it?

That's what I'm worried about landrover anorak
Have checked with a nano com...no codes...also think the guy that checked it resynced the immobiliser tothe fob...it now locks and unlocks...
I really am hoping it is just a crank position sensor but we will see

There is a lot of damaged wiring...there is a wire leading to nowhere next to the fuel filter, the kids that ruined it have also snipped wires leading to the doors and some of the centre console ones...

Ok, I'm not much of a mechanic at all...only 16😶but I was hoping that it would run as it was, and that those damaged wires weren't going to affect getting it running
So I take it I should get working diagrams and work out what's missing then?

The ECU is fine as i have taken it out and tried it on my friends td5

thought you had to code the ECU to the AS10 for it to work

recommend you get a Hawkeye or nanaocom , takes so more guesswork out of the equation 1999 90 TD5 CSW

Check your battery connections (both ends of each cable) and check the voltage at the fuel pump relay.
The relay will not close unless it receives a decent signal. Despite cranking rapidly your battery may not be up to requirements and you may need a new one. How old is it? Try jump starting with a second battery in parallel.

battery is relatively new I think but I've tried jump starting and have charged the battery as well
Ok will try all these suggestions, I really am quite a newbie with mechanics so may not understand everything, alsocant do much time on the land atm as I am finishing off rebuilding a classic tractor so will give it a bash in a place weeks time
Is the fuel pump relay an issue if I've replaced the fuel pump and getting 4 bar at the fuel pressure regulator?
