Is it my starter or bad earth ? NOW SORTED .
Got the dreaded very slow turn over then on second try it’s ok ish , and sometimes won’t even turnover it just makes a noise and clicks like a bad earth or not enough power !! ,

Now fitted new battery as unsure of age and still the same problem , I guess it’s time to put it on the ramp and have a look

I would say poor connection, but starters can fail due to swarf from the DMF if thats going too, dependant upon mileage, use etc

Had it up on my ramp earlier and it started 10 times in a row then on the 11th it was like the starter not getting enough power , so then put jump lead from starter to a good earth and the same started about ten times then like lack of enough power and starter not throwing enough Big Cry , when the starter works its spot on so makes me feel it’s an earth problem!! But still a head scratcher Rolling Eyes

Will try and get an hour on it tomorrow

It could be a "dead" spot on the commutator &/or sticking carbon brushes.

Two candidates likely to be the issue is as already suggested main Earth lead to T box.
Or loose battery clamps.

Also worth checking the clamp assemblies and fuses that nothing is blown or especially loose including cable lugs and bolts.

It is likely to be around the battery and it’s connections that is your issue as these were the areas disturbed and probably not the starter.

Are you sure the battery is good and the voltage is correct and ready to go?
If the battery is not the correct voltage in the first place and well charged that maybe an issue too.

It should read at least 12.2v. ⭐️⭐️God Bless the USA 🇬🇧🇺🇸 ⭐️⭐️

Only applicable to pre 07 land rovers
I be having good look at that starter motor

may you have same problem that later starter motor have i.e. coil main heavy switch contacts pitted you can get replacement solenoid but have and look at commutator and carbon brushes. before replacing it as commutator may not be serviceable

12.5 is pretty low if that is the settled voltage e.g. after sitting overnight with no load on it. A fully charged new battery I would expect to show more like 12.85v settled and the voltage charging is just what the alternator is putting out so all that means is the alternator is working fine. ---

I wonder if there is any issue with the plates in the battery?

In an ideal world, pity there isn’t a second battery to check just in case but that’s not really feasible.

Have you tried hooking it up to read voltage during cranking to see the extent of voltage drop? There is usually a fairly significant voltage drop on Defenders anyway during cranking but could be a sign to keep an eye out for. Any lower than 8v during cranking I’d say maybe an issue.

Have you tried the old battery again or is that not available now? ⭐️⭐️God Bless the USA 🇬🇧🇺🇸 ⭐️⭐️
