Hi badger110,
I've removed a couple of the inlet manifolds on pumas recently from low ish and high mileage vehicles and they've all been pretty similar to your images also none of them had running issues.I did have a pic of one but i can't find it Sorry. |

isnt that just the normal piston blow bye and EGR soot all mixed together DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

Sadly that looks entirely normal to me, and I suspect you'll only improve it by fitting a Provent or catch can and ideally disabling the egr.

It is good to hear it's to be expected, if a little alarming first time seeing it!
Any tips of geting rid of it? Any specific cleaning products likely to work? Tia |

Its not easy to remove all the sludge mess but in the past I've used alloy wheel cleaner and a stiff brush left to soak for a while then steam clean. Also some new seals wouldn't hurt it while you've got it off

This thick, cancerous, caked-on sludge is the combined result of EGR gases mixing with the thin film of oil originating from the crankcase breather which is plumbed back into the air intake before the turbo.
No matter how you look at it, it is a messy job to clean. I personally used a copious amount of break cleaner, numerous toothbrushes and finished at the jet wash station. I also changed all seals for new (8 x LR018370 and 1 x LR004404S) before refitting. A new MAP sensor is also to be considered as being caked with the same gunk. Once the inlet manifold is refitted, I treated the engine with Liqui Moly 5168 (Pro-Line intake System Cleaner) to further reduce the gunk remaining within the engine block that is not easily accessible to remove manually. I've added a picture below taken with a small inspection cam of one of the intake valve, I don't think the added weight of gunk can be good for it to operate at its best. As I don't want to be doing this job again, I have the EGR closed (through remap + blanking plate) and a Provent fitted.
