Forum member Noworries4x4 has the highest annual mileage of anyone I know on here, his 2012 Defender has, I understand, over 335,000 miles on the clock.

My '07 now has 240k miles on the clock.

I don’t think the actual mileage is the issue, there’s no doubt that all land rovers are capable of extremely high mileage. The op was in relation to a particular Land Rover, and that vehicle is way overpriced considering it’s milage. 2006 TD5110 station wagon

Just read the advert and I think the tent is standalone as it would be unusual I think to have a 4 berth rooftent but I maybe wrong.

Quite an unusual winch mount location too. 2015 HT XS 90

I e had transits with double that mileage not alot of miles these days, anyway if cheap worth a punt you can get a low mileage 2.2 out a transit for £1200 the still used them till 2017.

The whole point of the Defender as opposed to a modern car is that "generally" major components can be overhauled, so condition and regular maintenance is probably more important than mileage. There will be older models still on the road with a million plus miles under the wheels (probably on 2nd chassis, 3rd bulkhead etc) .
I've seen 2.2 and 2.4 Transits for sale with 500,000 on the clock without mention of a replacement engine.
Just make sure the price is realistic as some sellers are starting to get a bit overly optimistic especially with the Station Wagons. Irrespective of trim levels and fancy paint, it is still a Defender underneath.

For me it is about balancing your ability/wallet against each one you view. By ability I meant your ability/skill to fix/change things, by wallet I mean how much you are willing to spend on someone else doing the work. I went for a 110 with just over 100k as it was structurally in such great condition. I knew I could change/update mechanical components as and when over a reasonable period of time. What I do not have was the time to be chasing rust and replacing rear cross members etc as I can’t weld. Also I went for one as original as possible so not having to correct work previous owners had tried to do.

Take your times as so many come into the market.

very helpful thread, i'm currently looking at a 2009 usw XS spec with premium upgrade seats, momo wheel and full sound deadening and carpet.. Its up for £14,000 but has 167,000 miles on the clock. i cant quite work out if its a good price or not as like someone else said, the prices of these are all over the place. I've seen one similar, albeit slightly nicer spec with 100,000 miles up for £20,000 and now i'm confused haha

I know it isn’t a hitech problem laden Puma Engined Defender but not all high or low miles vehicles need be avoided.
I bought an Approved Used 1996 90 County Hard Top back in 2001. It then had 54000 miles on the odo and a full service history. 9000 miles pa had mostly been racked up as a dog walking wagon on the east coast in lovely health giving salt laden air........... The car is now 23 years old and 92000 miles so even lower annual miles in my care however it has been meticulously serviced by well known local LR specialist Independents (GEMM and Lix Toll Motors, Killin) at no expense spared. The only mechanical issue it has “suffered” was a seized transfer box after I ran it for 100 miles with not a drop of oil in it after a seriously heavy off-road weekend when unknown to me I had landed heavily on a rock and put a 1/2p sized hole in the casing.
it now averages 1200 miles a year, runs sweet as a nut and has been 100% reliable. 75% of the miles it has run since 2001 have been off-road and greenlaning in low ratio. In 2009 the chassis dissolved (I believe a well known problem with 1996 90’s) and was replaced by a lovely new galvanised one. So low miles aren’t necessarily a problem due to lack of use.
Up to last year it was still running on its production line fitted battery but one frosty overnight on the drive was one more than it could cope with but hey 1 battery in 22 years isn’t a huge financial burden in my eyes. It has also had 1 replacement set of tyres and alloys in all that time - I have the original alloys with an almost unused (2000 miles max) BFG AT’s on them but now have been running since 2012 on a set of MTRs on Zu lightweight alloys. Other an annual service, filter and oil change it has needed nothing else since 2001 - tell a fib........ the car was originally specced in 1996 with a optional diesel cat, when that failed in 2002 I had its EGR’s blanked and the electronics removed. It was also converted to a Stationwagon in 2002, which other than the chassis was my best investment in it, it was not fitted with CSW rear seats though as I diidnt need luxury bucket Country SW fold up seats and put in benches and belts instead- full conversion cost was £700 then. Cheapest car to run that I have ever owned. I bet 2020 Defenders won’t get away with minimal servicing or such good reliability - military grade production or not!
What matters ,high or low mileage, is how were they racked up and service history. One recurring problem I have had though has been failing dipped beam lamps on the offside light unit, solved by replacing the headlamps with LED units 2 years ago, driving at night is now possible too!

High mileage on defender 110 purchase
Hi
I hope it’s ok to pick up this thread rather than starting a new one, I just want to get an opinion on the importance of mileage when buying a defender.

The one I’m looking at is at the link below, it’s got 120k miles which feels like a lot but it’s a high spec and looks in good order. Any advice or pointers about what to look out for or what would be much appreciated as I’m thinking of going ahead and buying this one.

I don't consider that high mileage at all, my 2007 Puma has done more that twice that and is just about run in.

That is fewer than 10k miles per year after all. Personally I'd rather buy a higher mileage vehicle than a low mileage vehicle, since short runs accelerate wear.
