Hi All
I have found some similar posts but not solved. My Defender runs fine if I drive above or below 2000ish RMP If I try and cruise at 1/4 throttle approx. 2000 rev it feels flat and produces black exhaust. I can accelerate through it and all is well again. My Injectors are fine, I have new VCV, EGR is clean and seemingly working, air filter is new. Any suggestions as to next step please ? Its a 2010 2.4 Thanks Kev |

Thanks LR90 but they are super clean, I have cleaned them a few times.
I was thinking to replace them as the next step though ? Kev |

Hi Blackwolf
No stored DTCs, I have installed new silicon intercooler hoses and I flushed out the intercooler when I installed them. I'm trying avoid replacing the turbo, plus at high revs it seems to run just fine. Is there anyway for me to test the Turbo Actuator ? Thank you Kev |

It's not easy, but there are some simple checks.
- disconnect the operating rod from the actuator and make sure that it (the rod, and hence the turbo vanes) moves freely, there should be no sticky spots, - inspect the connector/harness on the actuator, a common problem is mechanical damage to the terminations, - inspect the wiring harness from the actuator all the way back to the ECM for chafing damage - the engine harness is notorious for damage of this sort, and if one of the sense wires is intermittently grounding or going o/c it will cause strange random boost problems. Some years back when investigating a generally-similar problem I was disturbed to find that the engine harness had chafed to the point when an actuator sense wire was completely severed, but even more disturbed to find that I could see bare copper on the main feed from the alternator to the battery at the same location. Quite how this hadn't grounded the battery and set the vehicle on fire, I still don't know. It was a very close call. For more accurate diagnosis you may nee to connect a diagnostic tool such as a Nanocom and look at live data, to see what is actually happening when the problem occurs. |

Hi Blackwolf
The connections and wiring harness appear to be fine. The actuator I would say is practically at the top when the engine is stopped. There rod/vanes move but there is a definite sticky spot about half way. I’m guessing this isn’t good news ![]() Kev |

That could well indicate your problem, I'm afraid.

I guess a replacement turbo is the only solution? Nothing serviceable inside it ?

HI
Just wanted to update and close this out on a positive, I drove my Defender this morning and I was shocked by its increased power and overall performance. It seems that by manually operating the turbo actuator/vanes I dislodged the blockage and freed up the movement. Still not perfect at 2000rpm but a drastic improvement, so long term I will invest in a new turbo, but for the short term I'm pretty impressed. Big Thanks to the Blackwolf ![]() Kev |
