There are four of five cottages / houses that were thatched. The steepness of the roof pitch gives it away, along with some postcards which we have that show them thatched 
It is a great shame. We have friends who live in a thatched house just outside Huntingdon and there are quite a few in their village which look great. I believe that our thatched houses were tiled due to the fact that the village was once mostly owned by the local estate and they will have repaired the houses a cheaply as possible. I assume that the re-roofing would have taken place between the wars? So almost 100 years ago. |

Loved this thread. Skilled tradesmen are in short supply nowadays and it pleases me to not only see someone who is very good at their trade but takes pleasure in it too.

I was talking to a bloke in a pub just outside Ashburton a couple of years ago who was having his house re roofed with tiles instead of thatch turns out that he couldn't get the house insured with a thatched roof even though it had only been renewed a couple of years earlier and had been accepted by his ins company. Don't make old people mad. We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to  us off.

There was a little thatched cottage in the next village to me. It had a fairly catastrophic fire maybe twenty years back now. The thatch went completely, but the walls stayed up. I was told that the insurance companies wouldn’t entertain re-roofing the cottage in thatch due to its close proximity to the road. It is now refurbished with a tiled roof. It doesn’t look half the property it was when it was thatched
Not sure if the insurance bit was true, but that was the story I remember? Our old barn was thatched once. It had been replaced for corrugated concrete asbestos sheets at some time in days gone by which I think you will agree was a far nicer finish than the original thatch The adjacent farm house had a thatched roof too. Both now long since demolished |

Our friends thatched house is right adjacent to public roads and has two open fires. But it is listed
They have never said that they have had a problem getting insurance. I suppose like modified Defenders, mainstream insurers will probably quake, but you can find specialists? |

I'm not sure that is right with the insurance company as there is always one that will insure you, if the chap was replacing the thatch with tiles/slates then the property was not listed, i find that most people who own cottages that are not listed will replace the thatch as they don't wont the worry that goes with having a thatched property Clayton.

That's right Rashers with the estate owned property's that they will repair cheap as possible, allot of thatched property's were lost this way
Most big estates use to have a rick thatcher and he would go around to repair any roofs that needed it but as time went on rick thatcher's became thatcher's and didn't work for the estates but worked for them selves Clayton.

As promised
My mate had started to dress the roof to get it as level as possible and you can the difference  Click image to enlarge This next pic you can see even more difference as there are not so many darker patches, these are wet/damp area's and will have a chance to dry out and then the roof can breath again Click image to enlarge In the mean time i was putting the ridge rolls across the top from one end to the other, this pic is 1 of 7 rolls used Click image to enlarge This is what they look like when on, the only time you can get them straight is on a new roof, the main thing we make sure of is that they are all level with each other Click image to enlarge in this pic you can see the ridge rolls at the top, level to give a better end result Click image to enlarge this is the block line across the back all on Click image to enlarge the block line all done on the front Click image to enlarge while i was putting on the top line, we call " the ridge line " my mate made a start on trimming the top and bottom part of the ridge line and putting our trade mark cross work on ( only when the customer asks for this ) Click image to enlarge then he came around to the front to continue the trimming as i was putting the ridge on Click image to enlarge this last pic is to show the back ridge with the trimming finished but there is one more big thing to do to make a big difference to the look of it Click image to enlarge So with all this work carried out, this brings you up to the end of today
