Where should I begin?
Whirling sound: Is a difficult one as I can't hear it. Could be Transfer box, diffs, tires or gearbox. If it makes a difference in what gear you are It could be the gearbox. Probably 4th will be the quiets. Tires are new but did it make the noise before? If you are not sure try to borrow a set from somebody else for a quick check. Were the oils for the diffs and transfer box replaced on service? Speed: It sounds slow. Did you measure it on a gps or only on your speedo? Your speedo could be reading low if your tires are bigger then standard so what is your tire size? If your speed is measured correct it is surely slow. The MAF is that a OEM one? Is it better when you disconnect it? MAP sensor clean it carefully. If the pressure reading is wrong you won't get enough diesel injected. The last thing I would worry about is the turbo. Does it make enough pressure? Other things to check: Is your airintake unobstructed and your airfilter clean? Has your engine oil level become higher lately? This could be the injector seals. Do you have oil is the red ecu plug? Is your handbrake drum warm after a drive? Same with the brake discs, Try to drive without using your brakes and then feel if one disc is hotter then the other on the same axle. Yes diffs and gear box oils done recently, the sound will happen in 4th and 5th just seems to be around 40/60 mph then all most goes away. I had mud train 31” tyres before and now have 33” ATs could almost be slightly worse with the new tyres with the vibrations but only slightly. I do realise the speedo would read slightly less with the bigger wheels but just think there is more to it than that. I still have the original steels with standard tyres on so will put them on soon and give that a check! I have only looked at the clock on the speedo I will try the gps this evening, Yes the MAF is a OME one as I was told cheap ones are no good, Map sensor I did clean out and it seemed fine do you think replace anyway? Original defender air filter is few weeks old tried a performance one and ran slightly worse I think so put original back in. Have not checked if the breaks for binding or the handbrake.. Will try this Yes I checked the ecu and I did plug it into a Landrover Hawkeye and no faults were showing Turbo boost I’ll have to some how check also |

Mine is a 2006 model and only does about 75mph,
TBH i have never been in a defender that does over this nor would i want to. They are not designed to travel fast just look at the shape! I don't personally agree that they should travel over 80mph and probably each aspect of the design suggests they should not travel at that speed. |

I had a vibration at speed - eventually found out that one of the steel wheels was slightly bent
Not noticeable when the wheels were individually balanced Only discovered when the wheels were swapped for the spare and the vibration stopped |
