England 2012 Defender 90 Puma 2.2 SW Indus Silver
BAS 170 map
After having experienced such success with the Extreme 4x4 ARB´s, I fitted to my 90 last weekend, I found myself musing that the chassis now behaved so well it could do with a couple more horsepower to chew on.

https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic75137.html

On Wednesday evening I sent off my order to BAS, and by Friday midday the remap remote unit had arrived. A few hours later I had flashed the ECU and went for a test run.

Exactly as described in various posts on here, the improvement is immediately apparent and is as impressive as I´d hoped.

A graceful and silky smooth early throttle response through the first 2/3 rd´s of the pedal, is followed by an strong surge of power toward the end. Feels like a far more lively vehicle than beforehand, whilst being more pleasent in traffic. A run up the autobahn confirmed that the speed limiter now allowed greater velocities than I´ve seen in a Defender previously. I went briefly up to 161 kmh (on my GPS), lifted my foot and grinned, satisfied that that was quite enough! Whistle

My 90 stands high, exposing even more of the 285 section tyres than most. Add to that the visor, and it aerodynamically similar to the proverbial barn door! The amount of wind noise that a Defender generates at that speed made it clear to me why Defneders don´t generally nee d to go even faster.

I´m very happy with the whole package, and my desire to climb into the Defender at every opportunity is strengthened!

Peter, thanks very much. Bow down Excellent and speedy service! Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Thumbs Up 1998 Tdi 90 SW,

Are you running a bigger intercooler and/or an egt-gauge?
I switched to the BAS 170 stage aswell and might install the bigger IC for peace of mind. I´m not sure about the egt-monitor though. ___________________________________

I haven’t fitted the IC after feed back from Pete. I don’t tow, and generally don’t carry much load and have had no issue with engine temp etc.

I have an Ultrascan gauge running off the OBD II directly in front of me on the column. Thumbs Up Permanently displayed are the digital speed, water temperature, intake and catalysator temperature.

The latter three give me a clear picture of whats going on. I see immediately when the dpf goes into regen, as the cat temps shoots up to 550°. The slight variations in water temperature, most significant when towing uphill in the summer heat are also immediately monitored. 90 - 93° is the normal temp. Hot outside, hill and trailer combined can push the water temperature up to 105°. No problem, and the factory gauge still shows a horizontal healthy 90.
Interestingly, there was a noticeable increase in cat temperature when I gunned it for a few minutes on the autobahn. I actually briefly saw 630°, but it very quckly dropped once i backed off. water temperature stayed at 93° the whole time.

Yes, Thumbs Up the cat temp had me thinking that the enlarged intercooler would be more than sensible.
I´ll swap to fresh silicone hoses at the same time. 1998 Tdi 90 SW,

Still pleased by the 170 BAS remap, but the the problem is I´ve started to get used to the smoother pickup and the extra power, and have somewhat forgotten how it ran beforehand.

So when my son recently borrowed my Defender (and as he drives a number of fast cars daily) I wondered if he would notice or comment on the difference. He was grinning widely when he handed me back the keys, and quipped that in the lower gears it is almost sportscar like in its pull and willingness to wind up the revs. He was well impressed!

Thumbs Up A well worthwhile investment. Well done Pete! 1998 Tdi 90 SW,
