You'll need a spacer to clear those bolt heads, unfortunately. This picture is of Blackwolfs NATO hitch on his receiver hitch chassis plate and shows the spacer he made from 15mm steel plate:

^^ Not a problem if you space it in the way I have. You just have to be a bit imaginative with the pin.

Is it just me that thinks that the type approval system is a load of bullocks, if you are not allowed to tow with something like a Terrafirma receiver hitch which is securely bolted on and the hitch held in with a big pin, while you are allowed to tow 3.5 tonnes with the factory Discovery 3/4 hitch which is infamous for falling off in the road with no provocation even without a trailer attached.....?

Generally speaking, these sorts of regs keep us all safe. They do have a habit of falling down when applied to relatively odd vehicles like Defenders, though. The fact that the rules about tow bars either does or doesn't apply to physically identical Defenders depending on when they were registered is clearly nonsense, but I guess it's a trade off between that and much more complex regulations. Except that they clearly don't as the failings of the factory system are well known, and presumably somebody passed that for type approval. It needs to be a man with common sense who can look at something and say that is safe or that is not safe. I understand the purpose of it, just the implementation is flawed if it lets defective products through and bans the use of perfectly good ones. ---

I have recently taken delivery of a new Ranger Raptor that surprised me by having a 2” receiver hitch as standard,
I haven’t towed with it yet & I know it’s tried & tested but the thought of relying on that pin & R clip is concerning me a little 😳 |

It’s surely no different to a single pin on a Dixon bate sliding drop plate though? Albeit a slightly narrower pin.

Yes probably but I’ve never had to rely on one of those either,
Like I say it’s tried & tested around the world but the thought of our 2t wobble box only held on with a pin the thickness of my finger is worrying  |
