So thought it’s about time to make a thread on my defender and the journey we will be making.
Picked it up when Spain came out of lockdown (just in time as looks like we may be going back into lockdown soon) Click image to enlarge It’s got tinted rear windows, damaged rear door and a few other issues that I have already a long list. Picked it up on one of the hottest days of the year and the garage informed me the aircon was not working. (It was that heater switch that controls the hot water entering the matrix, so one tie wrap later dealer was not to know (they have since paid for a new air con dryer to be fitted as that’s what they diagnosed the issue as) It’s now got a ORE rear carrier, mainly to take the weight of the damaged door (think somebody revered into something in its previous life) So yesterday I was out and about (actually returning from a race circuit called Ascari) and thought I would try to get a photo with the amazing backdrop Click image to enlarge Then i thought I can do better so went on a little off-roading down a service road to get this one Click image to enlarge Still a long list of jobs to do. But it will keep me out of trouble (or get me into trouble) Searching for my first Defender...and started just as Covid hit, so talk about timing. 5 months after starting the search I found it, and here is the details |

Click image to enlarge Today was supposed to be a total fluid change but hit a snag with the gearbox it’s so caked in mud that I could not locate the drain hole never mind the fill hole. So after spending about 30 mins scraping getting it all over me that will wait till next pressure wash. Did the engine and transfer case. Engine was fine, transfer case was very low, about 0.5 liters came out so put the required amount in and I’ll monitor it, I think I have a leak in the transfer case somewhere and history of the car does show a leak or issue with transfer case in the past. Also noticed that the turbo heat shield was loose (tab missing where a bolt should be, so have to add that to the list and thanks to this site noticed the hazzard light does not light up at night so another bulb to change. A nice conversation I seen last time I was in Spain was a 110 with the alpine roof removed. Hoops and canvas fitted for quick removal in Spanish heat and sun.

So with thanks to a forum member who sold me some rear lights though I better fit them
Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge So with the rear lights on, during the job encountered a little bit of dirt/soil etc from the previous owners exploits Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge So don’t forget to clean behind there... lucky in Spain it’s not that wet or I don’t think I would have a chassis soon. Also on the subject of bulbs managed to update my heater control bulbs to led (one of them was blown and another was very dim. Click image to enlarge I also tried to change the clock bulb but the replacement led on would not locate securely so as it was not broken put back in the std one. Keen eyes people will also notice hazzard light switch is not illuminated that I’ll get next time the dash part is out. Also took the change to put in the cable for my new Ariel as the last one was broken, so now I have working radio again. Looking forward to more installments, couldn't believe my eyes to see the mud behind the rear lights. The previous owner must have had some serious off road fun. Great to see blue sky and sunshine!

I think it’s an ex andalucia forestry, ‘midió ambiente’ or similar vehicle. Through the service history (rare form a Spanish vehicle) I know where it was based, very hot area of Spain, and in the right light you can see where old stickers were (not actually cleaned it myself yet)
There is defiantly lots of dried on mud underneath, I have been slowly attacking areas to clean when I need to access them. Next one to clean will be the gearbox as want to change the oil, and at present I cannot even see the fill plug due to mud 😂 Searching for my first Defender...and started just as Covid hit, so talk about timing. 5 months after starting the search I found it, and here is the details |

Click image to enlarge So yesterday found myself here at Ascari. Very nice place in the world close to Ronda. Looking after these 3 machines Click image to enlarge Had some issues on the way home with loss of power so ordered a new vcv and fuel filter to see if that cures it, no idea when the filter was changed (if ever) Searching for my first Defender...and started just as Covid hit, so talk about timing. 5 months after starting the search I found it, and here is the details |

Click image to enlarge Last Sunday was the turn of a test day at Monteblanco circuit in southern Spain. Still had the hesitation issue so manages to change the fuel filter for a genuine one today Click image to enlarge Next weekend back over to Monteblanco for a race weekend, let’s see if anything has improved, I don’t think it will of but testing one thing at a time is the best way. Also started to get the towbar installed but realized I had a rivnut insertion tool for m4, m6 and m8 and you guessed it the bolts for the wiring are m5, so Amazon will get one to me tomorrow so I can continue. Side steps, gone for black on black, noticed I have two plastic trays under the car where these fit, covered in mud on the inside so waiting to sneak them into the parts washer (dishwasher)
