I’m pretty sure the lights clamp to the headliner itself, so no need to back it with anything. Re the wiring, just remember you need to be wiring it in parallel, not series. Other than that it’s pretty straight forward.

Just fitted one like that. Small hole for wires and led control panel on back of switch them screw to headlining. You can do it without the plinth. Cheers

That is exactly how I did the rear seat area light in my DC (except of course it is connected to the front light because there isn't a load area light on a DC). No plinth needed.
