When the missus got a 05 D3 the first thing I did was to undo the EGR pipe connector and put a put a 2 pence piece in to block the pipe work both sides until I got the blanking kit from Pete Bell.
Simple times Good luck |

Just had a chat with my main man - seems that everything will be “sorted” - he was fairly open minded that there wasn’t solid data either way, we spoke about the old exhaust, and I offered to take it round for him - but he wasn’t happy about that 😂. Seems it was a new tester and not him that carried out the mot.

I can't quote Ed and DorsetSmith in the same post on my iPad (well, maybe I can but it would take forever). My car was a low line 'poverty' spec 110 SW. A 1994 vehicle, so I assume one of the early 300s. No EGR or CAT. I didn't own it till about 2002 so it's possible that an EGR and CAT were removed before then, but unlikely given that it was a corporate owner. On the other hand it has a chassis number beginning with MA943*** Confused, me? Yes. Never, ever had the question even sniffed at during MOT testing. Meanwhile, in another realm, when ordering a new wiring loom with autosparks, my VIN number caused them a lot of confusion, insisting their system showed a 1996MY vehicle, on a 200Tdi..... I do wonder how accurate some of this information was originally, and how much has since got confused through the mists of time. None of which helps the OP I'm afraid.... except that MOTs in Inverness might be easier?? Donald 1994 Defender 300Tdi 110 SW - owned since 2002 - 230k miles and going strong (The 'rolling restoration' or tinkering thread: http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic58538.html ) 2000 Range Rover P38 4.0L V8 in the past.. RR classic - fitted with 200Tdi 1984 RR classic - V8 with ZF auto box 1993 Discovery 300Tdi not to mention the minis and the Type 2 VW camper... |

Thought having MOT's, Tax and running on white diesel meant you were posh north of Inverness.

Mine was a CSW originally 94 I think. Again a corporate owner from new and I think I was the third owner, the second simply kept it serviced well and in immaculate condition (unlike the current 12+ year owner). From memory my VIN is MA962... Never had issues (well with EGR) on my MOTs but I am in wild west Wales now... I wouldn't hold much by the accuracy of various systems. According to the V5 my second vehicle is a twin axle 109" with a 5.7l diesel in it, um.... Click image to enlarge Ed 82 Hotspur Sandringham 6x6 95 Defender 110 300Tdi |

All this talk about chassis and engine numbers being wrong for the type of vehicle remind me of the Austin/Rover Montego I owned many many years ago.
The registration document showed it as a 1.5L basic Montego when in fact it had a 2.5L MG engine with MG trim but without the MG badges. I hadn't even bothered to check the engine size and had insured it as described on the document and sold by the garage. It was only after a person backed into the vehicle did the truth come to light when the insurance co had it inspected, first thing to happen was insurance voided, followed by vehicle being impounded, then me starting legal proceedings against the garage that sold it, they in turn worked very quickly to produce the build sheet which showed that the vehicle was an end of the basic model and the run in to the MG model and was supposed to have the 1.5L but had infact had the 2.5L MG engine fitted no wonder it was like the what's it off a stick. So somebody who thought they had a 2.5L MG engine had infact got a 1.5L engine. Don't make old people mad. We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to us off. Richard |

Check your engine number. 16L had no EGR and were usually pre 1996MY. 23L had EGR 1996MY onwards. |

I re-instated my EGR due to conflicting pro/cons of blanking it.
Also, as is the case with old diesels we have to be very careful as the emissions from our vehicles will be scrutinised along side the environmental bods demands for EVs any opportunity to get a car off the road so to speak would be taken. So, my EGR is back on and now i don't fall foul of MOT regulations or insurance not backing me if i had an accident with a modified car!! Food for thought. |

You’ve probably lessened your MPG, decreased your power and created more emmisions doing that than it was before as it’s more efficient and with a tune it brings the fuelling efficiency much more up to a high standard. Couple that with using a fuel additive I’d say they are worse out the factory than with a few mods as it improves efficiency and fuelling characteristics.
Except CAT removal, I think that certainly isn’t a good thing.. No Guts, No Glory. 🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴🇮🇪🇺🇸⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |

My 1996 TDi 300 had them removed sometime round about 2004 and the only thing that has ever come up on an MOT was that I had fitted LED running lights all round with no visible CE mark, never any comment about the cat and EGR not being there. Over the years it’s been MOT’d at 4 or 5 different garages, a main dealer and at Budget Tyres (now part of KwikFit)
It was done again 3 weeks ago at the village garage who are Landy Indies. I was told when the gear was removed that at build it wasn’t a legally required piece of kit but that changed not long after mine was built. Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come 2020 D240 1st Edition in Pangea Green with Acorn interior. Now gone - old faithful, no mechanical issues whatsoever ever but the leaks and rattles all over the place won’t be missed! |
