If it was fitted from the factory then yes. Although I didn't think defender diesels had cats until EU3 Td5.
Later Tdi's definitely had EGR and tampering with an emissions control device is a fail I'm afraid 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon 1990 Vogue SE Triumph Tiger Explorer 1200 Td5 90 Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic50767.html Tdi 110 Thread https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic69562.html RRC Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic54492.html Instagram http://www.instagram.com/george_grafton |

How later is later though I think that’s the key? Certainly no mention on the V5, though LR are typically shy when it comes to that sort of info. He’s passed it twice before no dramas. Might have to take it elsewhere if they are going to be a bum. The EGR blank is as old as the manifold by the looks of it.

300tdi Discoverys of that era had a cat but I don't think Defenders got them until the TD5 was introduced. It used to be a common mod 'back in the day' to fit a Defender non-cat downpipe to a Discovery.
I can't find a definitive answer but as far as I can tell, all UK 300tdi's would have had an EGR valve when new. Darren 110 USW BUILD THREAD - EXPEDITION TRAILER - 200tdi 90 BUILD THREAD - SANKEY TRAILER - IG@landroveranorak "You came in that thing? You're braver than I thought!" - Princess Leia |

Not all - some of the very very early 300Tdis didn't have an EGR, mine hasn't had one fitted from factory. Ed

Fair enough, but by '96 they did. Darren

This sort of info wouldn't be on a V5. I'm struggling to remember as it's nearly twenty years ago when I removed one from a 300tdi Discovery, but ISTR a vacuum tube and the hose from the intercooler having a spur on it that fed the valve. Typically, these are just blocked up when removing the valve so if they're still in your engine bay then it's a safe bet that it used to have a valve fitted. Unfortunately, the opposite isn't necessarily true as these parts could be removed too and replaced with non-valve alternatives. Well this is all awful news, having had it off the road for so long. So no proof it was fitted, no proof of it being removed, and the likelyhood is the same for the cat. Looks like I’ll pay my money and go elsewhere. I’ve got an allisport intercooler, deffo not sure I’ll be reinstating an EGR just for an MOT.

I don’t seem to have any wiring either, if the EGR solenoid is a thing! What a nightmare.

It'll be interesting to know how you get on with another MOT station. I think this sort of detail is held on their test computer system, so you may find the same issue everywhere. I also have a suspicion that testers have been told to clamp down on this sort of stuff. Darren

I think the early valves were vacuum operated, so just a small pipe. Darren

I've had both versions;
M reg without an egr (and no evidence of it ever being fitted) (and no cat) and now a P reg which I rebuilt but prior to this it had both cat and egr - it has neither now and still passes MOT's - though the garage is one which is happy to test older landrovers 1996 300Tdi Defender 110 |

I’m just waiting on a phone call with the tester, if anything it at least proves he wants to discuss things - I’ll probably go softly softly about it passing with him prior! I never had issues with my 90 either. Swings and roundabouts eh.
