So in addition I have now changed the fuel filter, checked the relays under the seat are all pushed in firm. The orange engine management light is illuminated so I presume there is power to the ECU. I now have clean fuel with no bubbles present in the clear plastic pipe I have added to the blue fuel line connector going to the pump, but no smoke on cranking the engine from the exhaust. Now my only thought is whether the VCV I replaced is faulty (£30 new off ebay) and I need to buy a Denso or Genuine LR (twice the price but maybe you really do get what you pay for)
Can I slacken a connector on the fuel rail to check the VCV is working ? |

Can you hear the fuel pump prime when switching the ignition to position 1? Ray

No noise in position 1 but I have never heard one previously. Forgive me but I thought the Fuel pump was just the mechanical on the engine with no electric pump in the tank (2.4 TDCi)
Does anyone know what the green connector ( not the VCV connector ) on the Fuel pump does and if I can test it ? |

This maybe a outside of the box thought, but could it be the immobiliser, if you have an alarm fitted ? 1996 Golf Blue 300Tdi 110 Pick up.

OK so the Green connector is temperature sensor - I will rule that out then.

Thanks
I will try an immobiliser bypass , at this stage I will try anything, but I thought the immobiliser would stop the engine cranking. |

I didn’t think the 2.4 had a tank pump, so had to have a special tool to bleed fuel ?
Does the 2.4 have a crash sensor for the fuel system. |

I'm no expert, but i think from memory that a mate on a Td5 i think had this, it would crank, but not let it start 1996 Golf Blue 300Tdi 110 Pick up.

If it is the immobiliser then the light in the instrument cluster would normally inform you
What is immobiliser light doing? |

That’s what I thought. So the OP will need to get priming device to bring fuel up to the engine.

Blowing hard into (or connecting an airline to) the tank breather works just as well.

So this morning I applied the bridge to the IPAC - no change
Swopped IPAC with another 2.4 - no change. No immobiliser light on and 10AS locking working as usual by the way. I also went around the earth connections and added a couple for good measure. Going to swop 10AS and Engine ECU from another 2.4 tonight, just to rule those out. I also inspected the engine wiring harness and could not see anything but considering swopping that at the weekend, if no success before. I know I have fuel to the low LP side of the pump, so in my mind as I am not getting any smoke out the exhaust on cranking, it could be the LP / HP pump, pressure in the fuel rail or triggering of the injectors, but please if you can think of anything else, shout up. Still wondering if I replaced a failed VCV with a duffer that does not work also, so if my skinless hands recover a bit I might try taking the VCV of the running Defender and try it on this, but its a real pain with fat arthritic hands. |
