Hi David,
Not heard of this one. Out of interest are these the original 2013 tyres? Also what tyre brand are they and miles they've done. I certainly know age can effect tyres but your truck isn't old. The form makes it sound like a defect??? Hopefully someone will come along smarter than me. Shouldn't take long

I know trailers are not MOT tested, but very common on Ifor williams and trailers of the like. Internal damage to the cords and the tyre distorts.

Hi Chris
I think that they are as I have different front BF goordrichs on front vs another and spare rear. Ive ordered new ones to match fronts any way, just wanted to know if i was being screwed by halfords again. David |

Possibly Nothing at Halfords would surprise me......
Not on a Defender, but I had a Vauxhall Astra where the tread parted company with the carcass of the tyre. The tyre was intact, but it wasn't something you wouldn't notice whilst driving. It was put down to a manufacturing fault by ATS. The tyre wasn't old, but no one was interested other than ATS who sold another pair of tyres  |

I've not heard the term "tread lift" before but the phenomenon of alternate block wear is common on mud tyres, especially when used for long road mileages and at higher speeds. I have however NEVER hear of a vehicle failing the MOT for this, since the MOT test only requires 1.6 mm tread over <whatever> percentage of the tread width and visible tread on the rest (or whatever the details specification is now, I forget) I do not see how this wear pattern could legitimately result in a fail. It also has no bearing whatsoever on the two faults you say are listed on the paperwork.
I can think of no circumstances ever which would coerce me into letting Halfords do anything to my vehicle, let alone work on it or MOT it, I would always prefer to go somewhere that employs grown-ups. I would say that you have ample grounds to appeal this. The last thing I attempted at Halfords was to get an replacement front number plate made for my Disco2, after it failed an MOT (elsewhere, not at Halfwits) for delamination and dirt ingress. The first pone they made didn't have a space between the first four characters and the last three, therefore was illegal and would have been another MOT failure. The second one they made had the right spacing but was the wrong colour, they'd used a rear number plate blank not a front. The third attempt was correct. In the end it was OK because I got a free rear plate I can use on a trailer, but it took ages and, well, how hard can it be to make a number plate? |

Because pushbikes don't need plates or an air freshener.... so they're totaly confused at this thought.... |

i had this many years ago when my mk1 fiesta did the same thing its tyre separation is part of the process when manufactured that has failed but i am talking 30 years ago crikey getting old

I haven't seen tread lift for ages.
It occurs during manufacture when they lay down the compound that is to be the tread on to the tyre carcass and it does not fuse together when vulcanised due to contaminates on either part. I used to see it a lot when remoulds were more fashionable and on the odd occasion on new tyres. It is noticeable if you look at the tyre from the side, it looks like a hump. Don't make old people mad. We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to  us off.

BF Goodrich are decent tyres for Defenders. If you had no brand rears then it sounds wise to have matching fronts. Back in the day I'd change all 4 tyres at the same time in my RS4 being four wheel drive. I'm personally anti mixing brands and tryi to keep more even tyre wear. Thats on performance cars though so I wouldn't worry so much on a defender's tyre wear as much. Chris |

If you do loads of milage, off road tyres may tend to crack :

It’s what all mud tyres do. As informed above. Every second block wears lower. They’ve always done it. And shouldn’t fail an MOT due to it
Typical halfrauds. I’d be interested to know how they brake tested it. |

As a side note.. I have just got me a new Ranger Raptor. I went into Halfords for some Ad Blue.. I said to the guy on the till, "that's the first bottle of this stuff I've ever bought".. he replied, "We can fit it for you for £5 while you wait sir"!! "FIT" a bottle of liquid?? OMG.. what is this world coming to?? I must FIT some Diesel on the way out tonight!! Sorry, back to the OP subject.. I would take the Landie somewhere else.
