I had this problem running on Grizzly Claw (they are remoulds) tyres and wasn’t doing more than 100 mile trips at any one time. The tyres used to get very warm and I think that this was the cause of the the tread coming away from the carcass. They never failed an MOT but after only 2 years use there were a few “bumps” on the tyres and my local garage advised to replace them ASAP. Since 2011 I’ve been running on BFG MTs with no problems. I only do 1200 miles a year, mostly off-road, in my 90 and they are hardly worn. The original BFG AT’s ran to around 65000 miles, 56000 of those were with the previous owner. Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come
2020 D240 1st Edition in Pangea Green with Acorn interior. Now gone - old faithful, no mechanical issues whatsoever ever but the leaks and rattles all over the place won’t be missed!

The first set of BFG KMs (the original not the KM2) I had on my Disco2 did 100,000 miles and were still entirely road legal when I replaced them. They had worn to the point when they were not much good off-road (about 5mm of tread), but I wanted to see if it was possible to get 100k miles from a set and it was.

The later tyres do not last quite as well, I think the compound is softer.

It’s what all mud tyres do. As informed above. Every second block wears lower. They’ve always done it. And shouldn’t fail an MOT due to it

The pattern on mud tires depends on someones driving style. Mostly tyre pressure and driving speed ...

I'm on the sawtooth pattern (each and every block uneven) Whistle

Tyre targeting seems to be the in thing with Defenders and MOT’s. MT’s by nature are tougher than regular tyres and similar to Argri tyres are bound to have minor (but not severe). Knocks and cuts and scratches, especially on tread blocks.
I think the KM2 is indeed softer but is a damn good tyre which I am using now. It may explain it’s better road manners both traction and noise too.

Tread cracking I put down to flex due to tread block height, hence the typical cracking at the block meeting the tyre carcass. Usually noticed more in cold weather too, I had some of that with my old set.
I would be far more worried about sidewall cracking though and also tyre dressing and cleaning agents can do damage. I don’t use any, any more for that reason.

I’ve not had a problem with Halfords for MOT, but it’s my turn in 5 weeks time again. 🙄

Avoid Ford main dealers for certain, Defenders were far too big, dirty and too much work for them. WeWillWin🇬🇧🇺🇸
