I thought it would be good to turn this thread into a bit of resto log. So, here goes;
I removed the ram, hardlines and pump and moved the press undercover. The frame alone must weigh about 150kg. ![]() Click image to enlarge Unfortunately, the base is a bit too deep to fit easily in the workshop so, I made the rear portion removable. It can't fall over when its against the wall. ![]() ![]() Click image to enlarge ![]() Click image to enlarge ![]() Click image to enlarge Next up was the disassembly of the ram and pump so I can identify the seals and hopefully find some replacements. One of the spring hanger bolts had snapped, a carefully placed centre punch, selection of sharp drill bits and a 3/8" BSW tap later and all was well. ![]() Click image to enlarge ![]() Click image to enlarge I popped two bolts in the spring hanger threads for added purchase and broke out the 36" Stillsons. ![]() Click image to enlarge Et voila; ![]() Click image to enlarge I'm hoping to get chance to pop over to a hydraulics shop this afternoon to see if they can supply me with the seals I need. 1985 127 V8 Build Thread Series 2 109" Series 1 80" |

I came across one of these not long ago, it gave me a very serious case of tool envy:-
![]() Even more so when I saw the price, the six inch jaw version is over £1100 ![]() |

Crikey, that Ridgid looks like it could grip the Earth and turn it backwards!
I picked up this set of 4 Stillsons for £30 so they can be had for a reasonable price secondhand. Having not needed anything this big before I only had a couple of 12" and 24" variants. A friend has a set of 48" ones for his steamer but, it was quicker for me to collext these than drive to his! ![]() Click image to enlarge 1985 127 V8 Build Thread Series 2 109" Series 1 80" |

Dropped the ram and the old pump seals off at a local(ish) highly recommended place last night. They were confident they'd either be able to source new or, have some made.
Fingers crossed! 1985 127 V8 Build Thread Series 2 109" Series 1 80" |

I am in the process of servicing my old Dunlop trolley jack. I bought this new in about 1975 and it has been a faithful servant for many years. Lately, like many elderly things, it has started leaking at unexpected moments, it no longer goes up as far as it used to, and when it is up it doesn't stay up for long, but slowly goes down when you don't want it to (there are so many parallels
![]() Be that as it may, it is old enough to need what are by modern standards odd seals. I have found that FPE Seals of Darlington have an excellent website with just about every kind of seal you might need, and the layout of the website makes it easy to locate exactly what you need. If you do an DIY overhaul af a hydraulic device, I recommend this site. I have no connection with the company other than as a customer. |

Had a call yesterday to confirm that they could get the ram seals, waiting to see about the pump seals.
Following a conversation with a mechanical engineer friend, I'm going to see if I can straighten the frame by laying a few TIG welds to pull it straight. 1985 127 V8 Build Thread Series 2 109" Series 1 80" |

Chuck it in the back and bring it down - my wee press should sort out that bend. If not I have a friend with a "slightly" bigger one... Ed 82 Hotspur Sandringham 6x6 95 Defender 110 300Tdi |

Finally, an update;
On Friday I popped over to collect the new seals and my ram from the 'specialist', on the way home I popped into another hydraulics shop who gave me some great advice re swapping from hardlines to hoses, more on that later. The pump was pretty straight forward to rebuild, I cleaned and flushed everything as best I could before resealing all the unions and fitting the seals. Eager to get the press working I set about rebuilding the ram, first step was to clean out and fill some historic gouges on the top face of the cylinder with epoxy. ![]() Click image to enlarge ![]() Click image to enlarge ![]() Click image to enlarge Then the first hurdle, the 'specialist' had supplied a replacement set of the chevron type ram seals, the total stack height differed slightly but I presumed they would work as they had the complete ram and seals to work with. Could I get the chuffing thing to fit? ![]() In the end I used a combination of new seals and old spacers, not ideal but it worked. The next issue was sealing the cylinder cap to the cylinder, I'd supplied the old o-ring which I thought had split when I disassembled it but in fact it was made of two different thickness bits of o-ring. Anyway, the good ol 'specialist' supplied two o-rings with different diameters and thicknesses, strange I thought. ![]() Ram back together and it leaked impressively from the threads on the cap, this happened a few times as I tried the different o-rings. ![]() ![]() Click image to enlarge All back together and we had pressure! ![]() Click image to enlarge The spring hangers were a bit worse for wear so a rummage in the bolt drawer and a length of 1/2" bar later and things were working smoothly. ![]() Click image to enlarge ![]() Click image to enlarge 1985 127 V8 Build Thread Series 2 109" Series 1 80" Last edited by Shroppy on 7th Sep 2020 6:56am. I picked up a length of 150x25mm plate for some press plates, which my bandsaw made short work of.
![]() Click image to enlarge I still need to sort out converting to hoses so that I can re-position the pump and make the whole thing a bit narrower, I also need to make a dolly for it really so it can be moved about a bit easier.... Anyone know anything about 10,000psi BSPT to NPT fittings? 1985 127 V8 Build Thread Series 2 109" Series 1 80" |
