Did the pedal mods as featured in June LRO today, fiddly but simple and boy what a difference!!
Every TD5 owner should consider it, makes it so much lighter and thus easier to drive. Andy |

The throttle pedal is a doddle to do, just use the pic in the mag as the guide. The spring is not under much tension when at rest so it's dead easy to re-position.
Clutch one is more awkward, I didn't disconnect the pedal which meant access was tight but only took about 20 mins. I used apiece of timber to keep the pedal depressed which makes locating the new spring much easier. Andy |

Do you have to get the throttle pedal out, or do you just drill it in-situ? I'd imagine it's a bit awkward trying to drill it in the footwell with the brake pedal in the way? 2005 Td5 | 90 Station Wagon | Tonga Green

Just drill in situ, easy enough to get the drill in, you need a 3.5mm bit and preferably a new sharp one! Andy

The factory setup has very strong return springs on the pedals making it quite hard work to drive, this mod changes the spring completely on the clutch making it much lighter (LR approved too), the throttle spring is just re-positioned to reduce resistance.
I reckon the clutch is at least 50% lighter now, throttle maybe 30% lighter. Andy |

I'd be keen on both of these mods; but lack the tools & confidence. Would be willing to drive (within reasonable distance to London) and bring beer/food if someone who's either done the mods or wants to is interested?

No special tools needed, just strong fingers and a drill for the throttle. It is an easy DIY job. Any independant LR dealer would do it for you if you really don't fancy trying. All the info is in the June LRO mag, happy to scan and mail the relevant pages to anyone who needs it. Just PM me an email address

Nothing to do with me! Marked up as a "wolf" item, but they're exactly the same. This one has the spring on it already, and I suspect the uber expensive silly little plastic U shaped thing. Straight swap over, and you could sell your old pedal to recoup some money. |

Just got round to doing the thottle pedal modification on my Defender TD5.
Does make it a fair bit nicer to drive, particularly on the motorway. The hole you drill does no harm, and the spring can be refitted to the original position if needed in about 20 seconds. I bought an old copy of LRM to get the details of where to drill the hole as l couldn't find it online. Basically you release the LH spring from behind the pedal and use the end to scribe an arc in the metal. Then drill a 3.5mm hole near to the rear edge. (The edge of the hole about 1mm from the rear edge, it's obvious when you look at it) The mod can be done easily in situ and takes about five minutes. Which is good as the bolts securing the pedal to the bulkhead appear not to have captive nuts on them. The clutch pedal mod l have done long ago on both my Defenders and it transforms the clutch action, goodness knows why it was not fitted as standard. lt's standard on the 300tdi and tdci. |
