Surprised at the gear box, i have the d240 first edition and find it great and really responsive but i do drive it on S mode mostly. Find it very quick at pulling out Also dont notice any blind spots but i am 6ft 1 not sure how small you are.
I am going to have to rent one of these old defenders, place local to me rents them out. Just need to see what all the hype is about and maybe end up with one |

That was an excellent read & thanks for taking the time to produce & post it.
What I found interesting is the gearbox characteristics - many modern automatic HGV's (especially the DAF CF series) are like that - no "crawl" forward or reverse & a delay in actually moving. Makes for heart-stopping moments in an 18 tonner at roundabouts or manoeuvring in tight loading areas. I'm pretty certain it's intentional to engineer the "driver feedback" out of many vehicles. These-days the older the truck I actually drive rather than pilot the more I enjoy it. The current defender has simply lost the plot as a working vehicle and I doubt if the interiors will stand up well on those allocated to the utilities/engineering sectors where the crew are more concerned with getting on with the job than treating the vehicle like a car. |

I would like to hope the gearbox is issue with the 'test' car as that does not sound right, Blind spots on modern cars are bad, I'm 6ft 2 and the wife's Clubman has side pillars so big I struggle to see past it when turning right out of our drive, It houses airbags and tweeters... and is sooo thick. I was looking forward to the new Defender, I have not driven one, just been to see them at a showroom. I'm just underwhelmed by it. Not excited as I thought I would be at placing an order and choosing spec. It looks fine from the outside... like many think the name should have been something else though. Inside for the price the quality of the finish does not look like a £50K plus car (the one I specified was closer to £75K which is crazy. My dad has a FFRR and that just looks quality inside for £75K the new defender is not a patch. Then ok you compare it with similar priced cars, from Porsche, volvo, Mercedes, BMW SUV's the Defender is far more plasticy. Fine if I were buying a £20K Jimny but for in a £75K car ?? They Obviously don't want the farmer / worker market anymore.... Yet they want the inside to still look 'rugged' however it all looks a bit pretend and staged... not sure in the real world how long it will keep the 'look' Also as with most 'new' cars in 3 years or less it will have an update, the door handles with be flush like the rest of the range, the lights front and rear will change. So all of a sudden your 'New' Car is an old model (and another wack off your depreciation) All good for me though, my pot of money stays in the bank and I keep searching for Series 1/2/3's that pop up, then wait on more details of the Grenadier . In relation to the poor response of the throttle/gearbox when pulling away, I wonder if this is a software related "safety" feature. My other car is a PHEV automatic. It has a built in safety feature which stops you from suddenly shooting away from rest. It is supposedly there to stop you from accidentally pressing the accelerator too hard and hitting the garage wall or worse. Not tried it yet, but it has no effect on normal driving. You get crawl in forward and reverse and instant response for accelerating. I know we are not comparing similar drive trains, but do wonder if all these new safety features are really necessary, and whether JLR have built something similar into their software. |

Thanks for an interesting review. I don’t find any issues with the gearbox and so far in 1800 miles haven’t used the S / Sport settings other than when off-roading. I’m used to various forms of TR/TR2 having owned RRS1, RRS2, Evoque and L322 Full Fat RR and agree that the semi-hidden selection from the seat heater/ climate control settings is less than ideal and needs to be redesigned. Also the way to re-select high ratio should be more obvious.
TBH, the fact that an “off-road Pack” with All Terrain Tyres, e-diff etc is an expensive option on the vehicle supposed to replace an off-road icon is very telling of the market that Land Rover is marketing this vehicle at, optional off-road kit is more associated with Mercedes, Audi and BMW, never would I have thought that an iconic maker of off-road vehicles would make the buyers of what is marketed as a serious off-road vehicle have to opt to buy a pack of options to make it one, all those items should be standard kit on every model in the range - I’m now running Duratrac AT tyres on mine at extra cost, they are a little noisier on road that the All Season tyres the car came on but have removed one of my concerns about off-road road performance. My biggest issue with New Deffender is the dreadful Quality Control of the car when it was delivered to me in June - a very obvious deformed window seal causes leaks into cabin (still not fixed after two visits to the dealership) rattles from drivers side front and rear doors and/or the B pillar, rattles from the A pillar trims (so far I‘ve waited a month for replacements as they are “on back order” somewhere) and now I have a front bumper that sat in Scottish sun 10 days ago and has deformed........... so far I’m relieved that my long suffering dealer hasn’t told Me “they are all like that sir” but from what I’m reading it might not be long before I am told that....... having owned a £38,000 faultless Mini Countryman for the last 2 years prior to the new Defender I’m disappointed that LR seems to think it’s ok to sell people a £60,000 car with so many issues, but they seem to think that’s fine............ It’s not like I don’t know what the old Defender was like as I have a 1996 TDi300 90 on my drive as well as the L663 - in 24 years / 93000 mostly off-road miles my old one has only failed when I’ve broken it, it has never failed in service mechanically and I don’t have confidence that the new one will go that distance. I bought the Mini Countryman PHEV in 2018 after 26 years of ownership of Land Rover products and since 2000 that has included 3 RRS, 2 L322 Range Rovers and 2 Range Range Rover Evoques all bought new and all,except my last 2014 Evoque Dynamic ,were well used off-road . I moved over to the Mini because of an issue of SDv6 engine failures that Land Rover tried to blame on incorrect use by owners when it was in fact a design issue. The day I took delivery of the Countryman I put a deposit on a New Defender PHEV, glad I didn’t hold my breath for that one and despite all the issues that are souring my experience with the Pretend Defender I love it, but please JLR (I know you won’t be reading this but live in hope) will you contact me and arrange to rebuild my new car properly. Don’t get me wrong, I love the new Defender what is souring it is very poor QC by the maker. Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come 2020 D240 1st Edition in Pangea Green with Acorn interior. Now gone - old faithful, no mechanical issues whatsoever ever but the leaks and rattles all over the place won’t be missed! Last edited by Tim in Scotland on 17th Aug 2020 11:03am. i thought your score of 2.5/10 very interesting and somewhat predictable of a number of posters on this
forum. I would like to revisit that in 18 months and come back to the forum. I pick up my new Defender next month, and in March 21 it will start a full lap of Australia, including various terrains and challenges, so about 16-20K KMs of touring / overlanding, all up about 12-16 months of off road use If it performs as well and i expect better than my MY10 RRS (which has racked up many miles/KM's off road), then i will look at your score and provide a response based upon a real world and longer "trial" period in one of the more challenging parts of the world. Being ex Army (British) i have a long standing love/hate relationship with Land Rovers.. so comparing the new vs the old will be very interesting yet another pommie bar steward down under MY20 110 P400 SE Defender MY10 3.0 RR Sport |

It is a good discussion point I agree I scored it in two ways, as ultimately it isn't a bad vehicle overall. But when someone sells something and claims it to be a direct spiritual successor to an icon, with a legacy spanning 70 years. There are high expectations to live up to that icon. And this is where, in my opinion. This model falls flat on its face. It is just a completely different type of vehicle. For your intended use, I imagine it will perform brilliantly. But I'm sure if you had a Disco 4, then that would also perform equally as well. And if we are being objective and reasonable. A Disco 4 is also a long way away from being a Defender. If Lotus gave us a diesel FWD hatchback called an Elise, no matter how good or capable the vehicle was. Many would struggle to ever see it as an Elise. If Porsche had called the Panamera the new 911 and stopped making the real 911. There would have been outcry, despite the fact the Panamera is an awesome vehicle. But it is just a very different kind of vehicle. Hope you enjoy your new vehicle when it arrives |

I found the engine 'hesitation' thing quite disturbing.
My drive is cobbled & crawling along it to park, I 'got stuck' on a particularly large cobble. Maybe the 20" rims didn't help but I order to move, I needed a fair bit of throttle that did nothing until all of a sudden I took off at considerable pace & had to brake I hope this is a software issue that can be sorted as it rather scary! the crawling with an auto is very handy when hooking up a trailer or reversing a trailer, Makes it far more predictable and precise where your heading with it.
Seems odd this auto did not let you do that. |

Thanks for your comprehensive review. I did have a 90 on pre-order prior to covid lockdown, which i cancelled for fear of losing my deposit should things get worse and the dealer going bust. I will now be sticking with my 2015 90 Landmark until the new Defender gets some improvements.
