Failed two pin diff in 65plate 110!!
Just looked at a friend of mines one owner very late 65plate 110USW with massive amounts of slop in the front axle. The front diff has let go and looking through the oil filler, it’s the useless two pin junk, not surprised it has let go. I thought these two pin units had been banished from the front of the 110 in 2011 and replaced with the HD four pin, so what’s it doing here?! Last few months of production cost cutting exercise? Use up anything we have left?

Interestingly it has the very late HD one piece rear half shafts fitted from new, perhaps they bunged a two pin diff in to make up for the lack of drivetrain slop from the rear end?

Despite what JLR has claimed and what has been written in various places it is apparent that 110s were being built with 2-gear diffs right to the end. Some have 4, most seem to have 2.

With the 2-gear diff in a 110 it isn't so much a case of "if" but "when" it fails, it simply isn't strong enough.

I don't know if the 130s were also random or if they all had 4-gear diffs.

Impressively, my 2 pin front is 230,000 miles and 20 years old. It does have some play in it though...

I wonder whether it was the 110 hardtops / Hicaps that got the 4 pin front diff being as they were most likely to be worked hard and overloaded by Utility companies etc?

Either way I still can’t believe this end of line 110USW has been fitted with the total junk 2 pin, the cross-shaft has elongated the hole in the diff carrier, what a surprise.

What does the build spec show? or literature for that age vehicle from LR?

Surely there must be some claim for fraud?

Pretty appalling that a 130 has a 2-gear diff.

A modern diff should be good for half a million miles or more ... except in a Defender. I'd expect rear diffs to last 250k or more, 2-gear front on a working 110, well mine failed spectacularly at about 70k.

My 2015 USW has the standard 2-pin front so if they did put 4 pin diffs in, it wasn't in very many of them! ---
