Still enjoying this more than the launch of the current New Defender.....
Not happy admitting that but this does spark something the new Defender doesn't... Its not even that I don't like the new one it just doesn't make me want one |

The more videos I watch - the more I think the price is not going to be what was initially suggested.

Maybe not £60k, but I can't see it being under £40k with the VAT. With each video the proposed hardware gets more and more impressive (which is good), but more and more expensive looking. I was hoping for something starting at the top of the double cab pickup price range, but this is going to be way above that I reckon. I think you can just about get a H-iLux up to £35k in the UK if you tick every option.
In Europe there are no other vehicles in this class at that sort of price that I can think of, to help gauge if there is a market or not. There is no point comparing it to the new Defender, Merc G Class etc as they are all fundamentally aimed at a different customer. I would say it is highly likely to turn out more expensive than the 70 series Land Cruiser where that is sold. Maybe comparable to the Merc G-Professional, but I'm not sure exactly what they cost, where you can buy them or how many of those get sold. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS |

It certainly looks impressive and hope it will be a success. Can I afford one? That's debatable at the moment - depends on how much north of £40,000 it is when launched. Defender 90XS SW

The one thing it has in common with the new Defender is that they both have automatic gearboxes. I'd prefer manual. He gives his reasons as to why he chose to go the automatic route but I am sure a seasoned off roader could give equally valid reasons for a manual gear change. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

I think that's just their agreed party line. The real reason they are using an auto is that is what that BMW engine is designed to work with. I don't think it is offered with a manual in any application. They are just using what they can get. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

I wonder if ZF are also supplying the transfer box?
I suspect that even if they could offer a manual box, the largest demand from fleet and utility operators nowadays will be for an auto with less opportunity for users burning out clutches and other abuse from inappropriate down shifting and labouring of the engine in too high a gear. Incidentally the ZF 8HP is currently fitted in the latest generation Jeep Wrangler, albeit branded as a Chrysler Torqueflite 850RE. |

The zf auto box will probably be better for emissions and economy testing too. Im sure they looked at the options but paired with the bmw engine it does seem like it would be the way to go

It says they are using a bespoke transfer box, but not sure who is building it. I hope they specify a realistic service interval for gearbox oil and filter changes. A lot of car makers don’t even though ZF themselves do. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS |

I think the time is close when all new vehicles have to have auto boxes to comply with emissions regulations.
