Hi,
A while back I put the LOF vented discs etc on the front and I am very happy with them. I didn't go for the calipers, though, I think from memory I had genuine ones put on. Hope this helps. Last edited by ChrisDefender on 27th Jul 2020 10:58am. Edited 1 time in total |

Is the LOF stuff not just painted calipers with stainless pistons?
stainless have less chance of seizing as less likely to corrode but they still corrode. If you are low mileage vehicle and not heavy on the brakes anything will eventually corrode and give you seized pistons. personally for the price of aftermarket calipers compared to any 'super' calipers out there i would just fit aftermarket ones if you are not happy rebuilding your own. I don't see the value in paying ££££ for upgraded calipers on a defender unless its had serious engine, gearbox and suspension work so it drives more like a car and needs better stopping power. Standard , properly setup defender brakes work well. Cheers James 110 2012 XS Utility 130 2011 M57 bespoke Camper 90 2010 Hardtop 90 M57 1988 Hardtop Last edited by jst on 27th Jul 2020 2:17pm. Calipers are relatively inexpensive and easy to replace. I've always tended just to fit a new set of AP or Delphi calipers every second set of pads/100k miles or so. I have found that by the time the pistons start to stick the whole caliper has become fairly gnarly anyway.

I've just done mine front and back... I used LOF but went for the standard road spec discs and pads. I also opted to pay the extra £20 for a set of timkin bearings per axle and did those whilst I had the hubs off. Their kit was comprehensive and the quality of their stuff is great.
I then used LR direct to purchase AP Lockheed calipers (same as genuine but significantly cheaper) as I found their prices very competitive plus they had a few bolts and bearing spacers I wanted cheaper than anywhere else. Regarding calipers, because I don't do a lot of mileage once the pads wear my pistons end up getting covered in mud, road grime and salt in winter which corrodes them. Although I got 65k miles out of these brakes over 10 years, so I can't really complain, for the cost of a set of pads I'll probably replace them every 2 years to keep the pistons in and protected as far as possible. This should increase the life of the calipers and prevent sticking pistons etc. Note on my 110 the rear discs and pads were at the end of their life, however the fronts were only half worn. Sadly I had a sticky piston too so ended up doing the whole axle for peace of mind. Apparently the rears on the 110 do wear a lot quicker than the front, probably because they are smaller and there is more weight at the back. I fitted the full power spec kit front and rear complete with new bearings
Got to say I was impressed with the quality, packaging, delivery and price. I also painted the callipers black with high temperature paint from Buzzweld, from a corrosion point of view as well as looks, while I was at it I changed the brake hoses for Pinoeer stainless. I now have a brilliant braking system and well chuffed with the results! LOF brakes are apparently made by Hi-Spec and after a guy from the rally club said they were garbage and flexed under heavy braking, I looked for myself..
https://www.google.com/search?ei=6YoiX_fdK...ent=psy-ab However, Dan at DT has just put the bigger LOF conversion on a 90 he has LS swapped and reckons they were impressive, though you have to go to 18's for this. My v8 does not hang about, I have standard 110 front brakes and green EBC pads, it stops as I want it to. |

So question on that Greeni - is there a difference between a standard 110 front brakes and a 90 setup?
I've just fitted a standard to the 110 a set of new AP front calipers and standard size but vented/slotted discs from Tarox, as the current Tarox discs on the 90 have lasted well and don't seem to rust like some do. However I did (and still am) mulling over if I should have gone for a proper upgrade, with the LOF kit for example, which I think is smaller enough to fit under a 17" rim. Having a previously fitted an (expensive) big brake kit (Brembo) to a old Golf I used to have, it gave much improved braking feel, in that I felt I could modulate them a lot better - plus of course it didn't fade like the standard ones. However you did have to press on the brake pedal quite firmly for the same braking force - and if anything the 90 feels a little under servo'd as it is. 2005 Td5 90 XS 1989 V8 110 CSW |

how do the LOF discs and pads compare to OEM in regard to braking performance?

you would have to press harder for same feel as your displacing more fluid in bigger caliper/piston SA. Cheers James 110 2012 XS Utility 130 2011 M57 bespoke Camper 90 2010 Hardtop 90 M57 1988 Hardtop |

std setup is more than capable of locking wheels on std vehicle if it doesnt then something needs looking at.
fit upgraded pads etc to reduce brake fade if driving beyond standard defender requirements but a std caliper will do whats required with off the shelf std pads. you will see an improvement if you fit upgraded parts as it will mask to a certain extent the fault that was originally and probably still is there. free moving pistons, good seals, good vacuum and no air is pretty much all thats required. Agree, the RoadSPEC LOF kit + new AP calipers on all 4 corners has transformed my braking - and I'm not even trying to brake to much yet as bedding them in
My only bit of additional advice is ensure you put a reasonable amount of copper slip on the pads (both on the edge where they sit against the caliper and slide, as well as against the pistons. This is because the pads are a fraction smaller (I would say) than the original LR ones I took out and will otherwise rattle.
