New GearBox Fitted and Transfer Box leak fixed
Just collected my 90 Td5 Pickup from the garage, Transfer Box leak fixed and new (exchange gearbox) fitted from Ashcroft with up graded 5th gear ratio to 0.732 and heavy-duty rear support bearings fitted. Old Gearbox all packed up ready to be collected tomorrow

Sadly it looks like I might be selling the Pickup Big Cry

Hi,

Thanks for the message.

If I do sell I will let you know and give your cousin second dibs as a forum member has already put his name down if I sell so he has first dibs.

My 110 could do with a new gearbox.

Can you tell me.
How much was the Ashcroft gearbox and how does it perform? And what about the higher fifth gear, is that worthwhile?

Thank you.

If it helps, I fitted a recon Aschroft box 2 years (35k) ago and have no complaints, their customer service and advise was great. They were chosen over anyone else because they had a gearbox on the shelf and could ship it to me in 48 hours which was handy as the original collapsed on a motorway in Ireland mid-way through a trip.

I opted for the uprated carrier bearings and the v8 5th gear and would recommend the latter especially. Don't expect it to make a huge difference but it makes it a little more pleasant on motorways etc and drops the revs a touch, especially in conjunction with slightly larger tyres. 2005 Td5 110 Hardtop

Hi Lightning,

With the upgraded bearings and the upgraded 5th gear ration plus VAT, delivery and collection £1084 you also have to pay a £350 refundable deposit which you get back when you return your old Gearbox so initial total outlay was £1434. I had a garage fit the new Gearbox and fix a leak with the Transfer Box so my total was the best part of £2000 Big Cry

As Harry.O mentions with the upgraded. 5th gear ratio the Gearbox sounds and feels a lot smoother, I'm on a 2 hr drive tomorrow to Bromsgrove from Lincoln so will be interesting to see how my pickup handles a longer motorway trip Thumbs Up

That’s bad news, hopefully you didn’t lose too much oil from either unit.

Keep us informed as to what happens.

Had a good look this morning, small amount of oil on driveway looks like the oil is coming from somewhere around the transfer box housing. Spoke to garage yesterday so going back in tomorrow (Monday at their expense) to sort it out.

Just a pain as the Transfer Box has all ready been out once when the old Gearbox was removed to fix the previous leak. Was hoping with the new Gearbox Box fitted and the Transfer Box overhauled I might be leak free Rolling with laughter

This happened to me. The only thing they could think was that they must have damaged the seal on the main shaft when putting the transfer box back on. It took them two more attempts to put it right, although couldn’t see any damage to the seal when they replaced it. They decided to use a genuine seal instead of after market when they did it the second time. It still leaked. On the third attempt they sorted it and it has been dry as a bone under there ever since. That was two years ago exactly and 20000 miles. 2002 110 td5

Hi Jim,

Back in the garage this morning, to be honest they feel as bad as I do so hopefully they can find and sort the problem.

As you mentioned I had a feeling that it might be the case that the seal has been damaged during fitting, watch this space Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

I would look at the intermediate shaft in the tbox casing. It wears and ovals the bore it sits in, and the only real solution is a new casing, or sleeving a worn casing. The shaft can be seen on the front side on the tbox, right up beside the gearbox.

I was thinking about that too.
But it is not always that bad that the hole isn't round anymore. The O-ring can be damaged. Roel
