What is Loose? SOLVED = Bonnet Hinge
Currently doing 1500 km a week with about half off road and dirt road and I get a rapid heavy knocking noise from the front drivers side when hitting bumps or corrugations. Occurs at any speed from 20km/h to 100 km/h and sounds to me like the O/S shock absorber or coil spring is loose but this is not the case. My dealer (city) has tightened a few other suspension components but reports that he is unable to find the problem (as usual) because he does not have a rough surface to test it on.

Would like to know whether anyone else has had this knocking and would appreciate suggestions as to what the cause may be as it's driving me nuts. Banging Head

Check to see if the rubber insert on the bonnet hinge is missing. Also open the bonnet lift it up to open position and see if there is movement in it. If there is it is a missing or worn rubber insert. Had this on a new Puma and it was a dodgy rubber hinge insert. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Bow down Thank You, Thank You, Thank You. Bow down

You got it in one. I read your post, went out to the shed immediately, and 5 minutes later it was fixed. Very Happy

There was nearly 2mm of vertical movement in the closed position. The rubber insert seemed fine but I could jiggle the bonnet up and down and get the exact noise. Solved it by wedging a 1/2 inch long piece of zip tie into the gap.

Now on 'the list' for the next dealer visit. Thanks again. Thumbs Up

I get this same knocking noise over rough ground....with a couple of tie wraps wedged in it goes away too. Does anyone know if the rubber inserts can be bought separate from the hinge.

Has anyone got another permanent fix for this problem...for example injecting a little silicone sealant somewhere.....not sure if all of the rubber spacers faces need to rotate/slip or can be fixed to one part of the hinge?

Ive just fitted NAKATANENGAs aftermarket hinges and althought originally not convinced about them (hence why it took so long to do) I think they are great, they look smart and this is another problem they solve!. (interesting to see how well they last on those trucks that are used in harsh environments) DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy

Yes, they can. Usually known as hinge bushes, available from eBay or parts supplier of your choice. Darren
