Early sales figures in my eyes are useless, deliveries only started in March. The original Range Rover Sport only sold 35,000 in its first year. The Discovery Sport had a poor start, both have since gone on to be LRs biggest sellers.
My local dealer seems to be selling their stock pretty well, I was going to view a base 110 but it’s been sold before I got a chance to go up. |

Sorry ~ should have included a link, it's as posted above JLR corporate downloads Web page.
Who do you think they are being wholesaled to? Figures are not just for June ~ it's a quarterly reporting period now this Financial Year. |

I wouldn't say early sales figures are useless ~ unless it is just inconvenient to the story you are telling, as in the case of JLR. I quoted the figures for other startup models in my earlier post: "For comparison in the first quarter of sales the Evoque sold over 27,000, Discovery Sport over 13,500 and the Velar over 8,800." by comparison the new Defender is having a very bad start; again, that may be an inconvenient truth...but the full facts must speak more loudly than any anecdotal evidence from a single main dealer. |

in fairness, we need to factor in the fact that lots of sales would have been postponed due to the C19 lockdowns in various parts of the world? --

Factory closure and transport issues will also have a (large?) impact.....

I ain’t telling any story, not interested in the slightest how well it’s selling. They have sold over 10,000 when you factor in wholesale which was my point about my dealer. They don’t seem to be hanging around too long with the exception of the ridiculously priced models. |

They might be selling but I took delivery a month ago tomorrow and I have seen one other on the roads and about 20 on dealer forecourts. I know of one buyer who has taken delivery of two for his farm. I’ve seen more 20 Plate IPaces around than I have New Defenders and more 20 Plate Disco5’s, DiscoSports, New Evoque’s and RRS’s than New Defenders Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come
2020 D240 1st Edition in Pangea Green with Acorn interior. Now gone - old faithful, no mechanical issues whatsoever ever but the leaks and rattles all over the place won’t be missed! |

They must be going somewhere. Pentland now only have 44 available, it was 59 end of last month. I was considering a base 110 but they don’t have the colour combo I want and really it’s bigger than I need.

Absolutely true, which is why the new Defender sales can also be looked at in context with the other LR nameplate sales subject to the same CV19 lockdowns. Can you say anything other than New Defender sales look very weak? Click image to enlarge |

I don't have the dates to hand, but I believe that the Slovakian factory was closed for the shortest period of time of all the JLR factories. My bad - the actual figures are: Click image to enlarge Last edited by Supacat on 13th Jul 2020 8:04am. Edited 1 time in total |

The "you" I was referring to was JLR.
I really don't think you can count wholesale, otherwise when they are then retailed you end up counting the same vehicle sale twice. Wholesale is reported on to give an indication of supply vs demand, and also to help look at stock levels. Retail sales has always been the measure across the industry. |

I'm more sanguine about the business. New boss coming in ~ probably from outside ~ will mean changes within.
I think they have a different vision lined up for Defender and this version is just a stop gap measure. |

Are they all on the used car lot? Just looked at Guy Salmon Approved Used. They are listing 12 new Defenders, 3 have between 3k and 5k mileage, so assume they could be demo vehicles they are moving on early, one has 5 miles, two have 10 miles and the others are undeclared. I'd put money on the twelve all being 1st registered by the dealer yet really not being sold as in a proper retail sale, yet they will still count in the retail sales figures published above. This is a multi-site dealership but multiply that across the board by say 50 all doing similar with just 10 vehicles and that's nearly 25% of the retail sales not going to the public but just being registered and shunted across to the used car lot. Seriously, that is grim. |
